Former GAA President Liam O'Neill is believed to be on the shortlist for the position of GAA Director General.

If O'Neill was successful in being appointed to the role being vacated by the retiring Paraic Duffy, the Laois native would become only the second ever person to have held the positions of GAA President and Director General.

The Leinster Express revealed that O'Neill was interviewed for the position last week along with GAA Director of Finance Tom Ryan and former Tipperary hurling manager Liam Sheedy.

An announcement on who will replace Duffy is expected towards the end of this month, but if O'Neill is successful, he will become the first man since Limerick native Frank B Dineen to have held both positions. Dineen was president from 1895-'98 and then director general from 1898 to 1901.
