Waterford produced the second-half goods to down Laois by 2-31 to 2-19 and score their first win of the Allianz Hurling League campaign.

The Deise men were reduced to 14 men after just five minutes at Laois Hire O’Moore Park, losing corner-back Michael Kiely to a red card for an off-the-ball incident.

Neil Montgomery’s goal on 27 minutes had the visitors up by four but it was cancelled out by Ryan Mullaney’s superb strike three minutes later, as Waterford went on to take in the narrowest of lead (1-10 to 1-9) come half-time.

Laois would also lose a man early in the second-half with the dismissal of Aidan Corby after the midfielder’s challenge on Montgomery.

The O’Moore men had the sliotar in the net again on 45 minutes through Mullaney’s second goal of the evening but Davy Fitzgerald’s men soon got motoring again.

Dessie Hutchinson fired in their second goal three minutes later and points from the excellent Austin Gleeson, Montgomery and Jack Prendergast (2) had the Deise on their way to a first win in Division 1 Group B.
