Galway secured their first competitive win of the 2025 season by holding off Kilkenny’s fight back to come away from UMPC Nowlan Park with a 2-19 to 1-19 victory.

After losing out to Tipperary by 12 points last weekend, Micheál O’Donoghue’s side bounced back against the Leinster champions here with Declan McLoughlin’s goal inside the opening minute setting the tone for them.

The Tribesmen ran up a six-point advantage by the 28th minute and went in with a 1-11 to 0-10 lead at the break following points from Eoin Cody and Martin Keoghan at the other end.

The visitors enjoyed the better restart, with Tom Monaghan and John Cooney helping them go up by seven points, and they’d rattle the Cats’ net again via the deadly McLoughlin in the 46th minute.

Derek Lyng’s side responded well to the goal by the closing the gap down to two points and then hitting the front thanks to a goal from Cody with eight minutes left in regulation.

Jason Flynn (free) tied things up and sailed over two more placed balls in injury-time before Conor Whelan’s late score wrapped up two important points for Galway.
