Westmeath are through to the Allianz Hurling League Division 2A final after defeating Kerry by 2-18 to 0-21 at TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar this afternoon.
Niall Mitchell and Davy Glennon netted the goals in the first-half for the hosts to help put them on the path to victory.
It was Kerry that had led 0-5 to 0-3 when Mitchell fired to their net on 19 minutes and the frees of Killian Doyle extended the Lake men’s lead to five.
The visitors got to the deficit down to two by first-half injury-time, but before the short whistle sounded ex-Galway forward Glennon rifled in Westmeath’s second goal, leaving it at 2-9 to 0-10 at the interval.
Kerry battled back to get within a point with three minutes of normal time remaining ahead of Doyle (free), Robbie Greville and Jack Gillen steadying the ship for Joe Fortune men’s to see out victory.
Westmeath now face Down in the Division 2A decider next weekend as they look to secure an immediate return to Division 1 next year.
