Cyril Farrell reckons Cappataggle’s defeat of St Thomas’ last Saturday was the biggest upset the Galway SHC has seen in many years.
Oisín Finn scored a late goal to hand ‘Cappy’ a famous 1-13 to 0-14 victory over the reigning All-Ireland champions and send them through to their first-ever Tommy Callinan Cup decider against Loughrea. The final will take place at Kenny Park, Athenry on Sunday week, September 10 at 1.45pm.
“This could be the upset of the decade. It's unbelievable, the shock of the last 10 years,” Farrell said on Galway GAA TV.
"We have seen great champions being beaten, simple as that. They've done the six-in-a-row, going for seven. You couldn't see it coming at half-time, they were only two up. But the one thing ‘Cappy’ have had going for them this year that we've seen in all their games, they've been scraping them. Coming late. Coming very, very strong.”
The three-time Galway All-Ireland SHC winning manager added: No-one would begrudge them. You have to admire the full team. [James] Skehill early on kept them in the game... It's a historic day for Cappataggle. It's a tough day on St Thomas'. This day was going to come."
