Galway left it late to secure a 1-12 to 0-11 victory over Westmeath at TEG Cusack Park in Mullingar this afternoon.

Shane Walsh’s goal in the 67th minute proved crucial in the Tribesmen avoiding an upset in this one as they’d trailed at the half and got it level before their ace attacker punished a stray crossfield pass from Ray Connellan.

Ronan Wallace point was what saw the home side lead by 0-8 to 0-7 at the end of an airtight opening half and John Heslin would double that lead with a free three minutes into the restart.

The Connacht champions would get it level by the 55th minute and moved in front six minutes later thanks to Matthew Tierney’s point.

Wallace squared things up for the Lake men but disaster hit them with three minutes left in normal time when Walsh took full advantage of a mistake from the opposition, and injury-time points from Tierney and Kieran Molloy would ensure a second group stage win for Padraic Joyce’s side.
