Michael Murphy Retires

(Oldest Posts First)

And so the great man has called time on his county career. A magnificent servant to Donegal and the GAA in general. It is obviously very disappointing news from a Donegal perspective. But all we can do is be thankful for the many wonderful memories and wish Michael well in his future endeavours.

Had to be very expected news though. Would be 38 in 2027 big Jim did well to get him out of retirement the first time.

He was the best player in the Donegal senior championship, so I think most people thought he'd give it one more lash. But as he said himself in the past, he's an all duck or no dinner kind of man. Maybe he thought he just couldn't give as much again, and that has to be respected.

A giant of a figure in Donegal. Our GOAT for sure.

Michaels retirement is by no means out of the blue but somewhat inevitable. One would have hoped he could do another year but it wasnt to be. During his career I dont know of any player who was so instrumental to their team and this became more apparent when he rejoined Jims team in 2025. A scorer, a passer, a leader, and a general headache for any backline and what a leader he was in in 2012 at such a young age. A pity only one allireland but still Michael will be remembered as one of the best men to play our game in modern times.
