Which is why they're the greatest team to ever play the game bar none. I don't expect to see any team replicate what the Dubs did during those years. Whilst this years championship has been exciting, you couldn't say it was a spectacle of skill, still a lot of teams afraid to go for two pointers and far too concentrated on possession. I think also the goal will have to increase to 4 points to encourage teams to attack and not take safe options like handpassing round the arc to get in positions to kick one pointers. As well, no team should be able to loose twice & still be in contention for an All Ireland. Still a few tweaks needed to the championship to increase the jeopardy required to improve the game.

I agree about 4 points for a goal. That should never have been dropped from the original proposals.

Not that it really matters but no team did lose twice in the competition and win the All Ireland this year. Mayo only lost once in the competition, to Tyrone.
They also lost once in the Provincial Championship and twice in the National League, both of which are separate qualifying competitions for the All Ireland.

Well it does matter to be honest. The provincals are part of the All Ireland and hopefully always will be but of course now the talk is that it will not be as important as the 'next' phase of the championship going into the future. Lots of counties, including your own would be more than delighted to win a provincal. The idea that any team could loose twice and win an All Ireland is just wrong and needs to be looked at.

It's not possible to lose twice in the current format Sam Maguire, and still win the competition. Lose twice, you're gone.

This was the first year that winning a provincial title was irrelevant.
The league dictates which championship you play in.
When it comes to AI series results in the league or provisional are irrelevant.
You can only afford to lose one AI series match and ho all the way.

For all the experience on the sideline for Kerry with Jack, the star Cian O'Neill that was very poor game management down the stretch. Going and focusing on one two pointer instead of going for a pair of one pointers as they had time and possession to do it."
So youre having a go at the Kerry folk for bigging Mayo up ,while also having a go at those who wrote Mayo off?

It is. Dublin were beaten by Westmeath and Louth. And didn't Mayo lose twice actually? Provincials and next rounds are all part of same competition.

Ah jaysus, Pope. I thought you knew better. You most certainly can. Didn't Mayo lose twice this year in championship football?

You can even lose twice in the hurling and still win it out. Cork almost did in 2024. Well, they did lose twice and they also did almost manage to win it out.

I must look at Leinster, or if Viking is reading, he might be able to answer, but with the extra game in Leinster, could a team lose three matches and still make the qualifiers? That would mean that a team could lose three times and still win the McCarthy Cup.

Provincials are no more a part of the AI than the league is.

How so?

It's league placing that decides which championship you play in, AI or TC. Everyone plays provincial but (seeding apart) it has no bearing on the AI unless you're a Div 3 or 4 county who happen to make a provincial final. Vast majority of Div 3 and 4 counties don't make their provincial final so it is the league that determines their championship.

Now tell me how is what I said pure nonsense.

Jack O'Connor in his homecoming speech this evening said "yesterday they (Mayo) got All the marginal calls".

What did he call the calls Kerry got V Dublin or v Tyrone.????

Suck it up buttercup…!
Kerry were beaten by a hungrier, more determined, better conditioned and better coached team, on the day.

What part do you not understand, the provincials are part of the All Ireland Championship. You can't opt out of them. It's very simple.

Not so sure Jack will be in charge next season.

Quite a few of their ex players already questioning what went wrong in the Final.
When the dust settles, the review of their season won't be pleasant, such are the high standards they expect of themselves.

It wouldn't surprise me if TOS was handed the reins.

Perhaps Jack will decide he has had enough - who knows.

I think it's pretty obvious Jack will be there next year. All of the soundings he has made since the final would indicate that he's staying and he has another year left.
He knows he has a team which will be favourites for the All-Ireland once it throws in next year, and has one of the best players to ever play the game in his team.
Jack knows what it takes to win All-Irelands and he'll be reviewing this year in as much detail as anyone.
I'd very much doubt he'd want to leave on a low like last Sunday. He's a very driven man with a real love for the game.

Possibly so.

But when you have the likes of the O'Se's and Spillane, amongst others down there, questioning about him and the Final, you would wonder will the level of support down there remain the same. Maybe it will.

I think the last 3 games this season may have exposed some of their vulnerabilities.
I was sure they would replicate that Armagh performance in the Final but they were nowhere near that level v Tyrone, Dublin or Mayo.

He is a very good manager, but all managers make mistakes - and as you say, he would prefer to go out on a high.
We all know how much a back2back meant to him.,
So perhaps he will be chomping at the bit to make amends for this year.

Jim Gavin's record can only be compared to other managers who have achieved success within the environment of their home league ground only. The likes of Tyrone, Kerry, Armagh and Mayo winning All Irelands outside of their home league ground is different gravy - different gravy that carries more weight in gold when it comes to the respect of the nation.

He was appointed for a two year term last October so he's already in situ for next year.

We can compare him to Aimé Jacquet and Bill Bellichick so. Not bad company to be in.
