That's when we come unstuck every year. Other than that the guys get 3 or 4 games instead of possibly 1, it's hard to see any benefit from this group system as results further down the line - u 20 and senior don't really seem to be improving. Would we not be better concentrating on strengthening our own u17 leagues and championships ??

Any opinions or views on the Carlow match on Sunday ? Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 2199 - 07/04/2026 09:32:12 2665045 Link 0 |

Not hugely hopeful to be honest. We seem to score in bursts and then fall asleep and wake up when the match is over. Carlow will be buzzing after thier promotion and they are at home, so I will say a win for Carlow. I hope I'm wrong!!

Very best of luck to them but I would be of the same opinion as yourself. Carlow are really up for it, and who can blame them. Best of luck to minors tonight. Should be a good game

Fair play to the minor team for the win but they just about fell over the line in the end...have they qualified from that group now? stringfellohawk (Wicklow) - Posts: 156 - 07/04/2026 20:02:16 2665150 Link 0 |

A big week for Wicklow football got off to a winning start tonight when our minor team held on to beat Carlow by two points in Aughrim. Once again a Wicklow football team played well in first-half before fading in second half. At least this team held on for victory. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2188 - 07/04/2026 20:36:33 2665156 Link 0 |

The Minor match tonight was very entertaining and the epitome of a game of 2 halves. Wicklow were phenomenal in the 1st half and led 3-10 to 0-4 at the break. Carlow started the second half well but still a comeback didn't look on. They plugged away though and Wicklow just couldn't get hold of the ball. Carlow were now in total control and reeled off 2 pointers for fun. In fact were it not for Lucas Reid's two late points Wicklow were in serious trouble. Entering injury time Wicklow led by 5, 3-15 to 0-19. Carlow then scored a wonderful goal straight to the roof of the Wicklow net and had a brilliant chance to equalise. Alas for them the ball struck the outside of the post and their chance was gone. Worryingly for Wicklow, we were outscored 1-15 to 0-5 in that second half. Hard to know where we stand. Hard to know what to make of the minor match. Yes, we were amazing in the first half! But for the first 22 minutes of the second half, we just could not win our own kickouts, and got none of the second ball. And Carlow just kept plugging away. Our inside forwards did not touch the ball until the 23rd minute! Well, at least the management have the video and know what to work on. Next up in 3 weeks time is a home preliminary quarter final vs either Meath or Laois. This is where we need to step up and give a 60 minute performance... liam500 (Wicklow) - Posts: 236 - 08/04/2026 08:49:19 2665189 Link 0 |

I wonder if you might have put your finger on a major problem with Wicklow teams at all levels in recent years. We don't seem to be developing fielders of the ball around the middle of the field. Have we had a "proper" midfielder since James Stafford ? . A player that can be relied upon to field the ball and hold onto it the majority of the time. If you can't win the ball, particularly while under pressure, your team are at a major disadvantage.

True but Sean Corrigan is normally that lad for us at minor. He must have just had an 'off' 20 minutes. Can happen to anyone!
