It is a shame the way this thread has been ruined of late. It used to be a good place to discuss Leitrim football, some very good posters with a good insight into football in the county, some others you might not agree with but all had a genuine interest in Leitrim football.

Oh I think you are now thanks. You prob will support the Kerry team because you don't like Brigids as they probably beat your own club every year thanks and please. Very very bitter. Thank you.

They're all as bad as each other, in fairness Roscommon fans endear themselves to very few. A sobering game today and it already doesn't bode well for our chances of getting out of Division 4.

We move on arm in arm. I wish Leitrim the very very best for the season. I know deep deep down you all in the Ridge wish us the very best of luck up with the big boys. Well go for coffee in Carrick some time. I'll bring the muffins. Keep up the good work. Love and squeezes.

I wouldn't get too hung up on a January challenge game. The real test begins on Jan 25th. Neither team today will be worrying the trophy cabinets at the end of the year but I expect we'll be chasing promotion and the other side will be dropping down to their proper level.

A lot to be said on yesterdays game. Travelled to Bekan in pure fear to be honest when I seen both teams that were names. When Roscommon started to make substitutions after 22mins my worst fears were coming through.
Firstly, Tom Prior was simply outstanding yesterday. Arguably the best player on the pitch. His workrate on both defence and attacking is brilliant. He is so so effective.
Jack Kelly deserves enormous koudous. For a guy of his age and stature to make the impact he did was great to see. Once again we are producing seriously talented forwards.
Before I talk about yesterdays game any Leitrim management that goes into a year without: Donal Casey (injury), Jack Foley (Erasmus), Adam Reynolds (Non-committal), Darren Cox (injury) David Bruen (Emigration), Pearce Dolan (Emigration), Niall McGovern (Emigration), Mark Plunkett (Emigration) Oisin McCaffey (Emigration), Daragh Rooney (Non-committal), Fergal McTague (Emigration), Conor Dwyer (Emigration), Jack Flynn (Non-committal), Jamie Wrynn (Non-committal), Radek Oberwan (Non-committal),Jordan Reynolds (Non-committal), Keith Beirne (Non-committal), Jack Gilheany (Injury/Non-committal), Conor Dolan (Emigration), Shane Moran & Donal Wrynn (Retired),
That's off the top of my head who won't be available for this year (some talk that we might see Cox and Casey at some stage). Its great to see some of the players back involved that were not there last year but the reality is Leitrim can't afford to not have the sheer scale of players that I mentioned above not playing. Anyone who has watched either Leitrim club or county action in the last decade would know a lot of these men are our better players and have the S&C work done. I think most of us when naming an ideal Leitrim team would have a lot of the above players in their actual starting teams but at the very least they would be on the panel making it more competitive.
When you add in the crazy amount of injuries Leitrim seemed to have suffered over the winter (and were not fit to tog yesterday) and then a few boys with College Commitments this week you can see where we are at.
Interesting that there is only one Leitrim Gaels player on the panel this year - Paddy Keane.
Saying all that I am not making excuses for the management team either. Has Ryan Jones left the coaching group by the way? He wasn't listed yesterday. I also know that both him and Conal nearly decided to play for us this year but choose not to in the end.
I'm not sure what Poacher was trying to get out of yesterdays game? Or was he just trying to get it out of the way and wait for our injured players to come back for the league.
Our defence is incredibly weak - I really struggle to see how with the players that are available how it will improve either. Diffley is more than likely going to have to play at 6 as we have nobody else from what I see. McNamara did okay at wing back yesterday but he was excellent at corner back last year. Outside of that there wasn't really any of them you could be sure of at inter-county level.
Our kickouts especially in the second half were shambolic and looked as if Poacher told the keeper to just throw his hat at it and just aim for the exact same spot for everyone? I'm not sure how you develop a game plan with that attitude. After yesterday its more apparent then ever that Killian Gaffey will have to start in goals. In all truth Roscommon if they wanted could have put 10 goals past us. A long year ahead if we don't come up with solutions for our defence both technically and player wise.

Replying To Ros2013: "That was quite a strong Roscommon team and they are going well in training trying to make the cut before the Brigids and strokestown lads come back so I wouldn't read too much into it. Our new manager is ruthless which is badly needed as We were due a shake up." Not overly strong without Brigids,Strokestown players. The likes of Enda Smith,David Murray,Ultan Harney,Conor Cox,Daire Cregg,Niall Higgins didn't play yesterday either.
Leitrim was wide open defensively something poacher will have to address before the league. Galway development team up next in Tuam should aim to be more competitive in that game.

I don't think darren cox is cut out for senior level intercounty football, way too light and doesn't have the work rate in him. I seen that Bailey MacBride guy on the panel yesterday was he any good, did he replace Arek or is that just ScoreBeo acting up again? I think making ryan o rourke the captain for this year is another big mistake, constantly out with injuries. We need someone that's consistently out playing like riordan and give the VC role to Ryan

Roscommon the far better team cut leitrim open all the time. The kickouts were a shambles like a junior c team drive it to one side of the field and hopefully win a break no work seemed to be done on the training ground in that area. Leitrim had 5 u20s playing with 4 starting and all had good moments especially Kelly who kicked some great scores. Tom prior continuing his good form from last year with an excellent display. I thought mark diffley and Riordan o rourke played well also. Leitrim will be far more competitive when they get the likes of McNulty, radek, Ryan o rourke back on the field. It is disappointing seeing some of our better players not committing gilheany, Reynolds, Rooney but poacher has to try to make the most of what he has. David Feeney, oisin McLoughlin, donal feely didn't feature presumably through injury as they featured againsr Fermanagh.

He played the whole year with Fenagh last season when he didn't commit to the county. How can they get him fit but the county can't?!

I see Martin Feeney has left Dromahair and transferred to Arvagh in Cavan, will be still playing Hurling for Leitrim and Manor or will be be playing for Cavan one wonders? Also interesting to see if he'll still ref in the County.

Well I agree. But I must say this also. I haven't been on this thread since Dec 12 or 13, and in the meantime I expected very little actual football discussion anyway for obvious reasons. But to my surprise, it's been busy. And those posts here in that time have been generally good-humoured and not nasty at all; in contrast, I started a thread on something last year and most of the posts were two or three people trying to strangle each other about something idiotic (I think it started about Waterford beating Kerry in football in the 50s, I can't remember). But there's been none of that here. I've been entertained here today reading back through December's posts. And sure enough, following the Leitrim team's return to action, the proper football analysis and commentary has returned.

Replying To Leitrim4sam26: "Bad news for the senior panel, Radek has opted out for the year" I believe he is struggling with a long term injury that is being managed but wouldnt stand the test of inter county football which is a massive shame. Seen him a few times last year was excellent, and seems he was no where near 100% I know he didnt start all league games and came off in any game that AG were well ahead in after 40/45 mins last year so wondered was that the case. Only played semi and final the year before for AG
