Replying To 222:  "Couldn't agree more. Class big game player that was a vital cog in the success of monaghan GAA in the past 15 years. He made some difference coming off the bench in 2018 and 2023. Maybe even we could have pipped dublin in 23 as opposed to starting him if he came on. His two points Saturday night where off the charts in the second half and he deserves that medal."
Totally agree. Kieran should be spoken in the same breath as Monaghan greats.

Here come on, he was a really good player, really good, but he was no where near the levels of greats like mc manus, nudie, Beggan, Eamonn mc enaney, etc

Hes in the same breath as Wylies, Walshe, mc carthy, Bannigan, Malone, to name a few more recent men. He had a lot of games in a county shirt where he failed to deceive too, lets be honest.

Great player but no where anywhere near the greats of monaghan football.

Tier 3 Banningan & McCarthy
Tier 2 Wendell
Tier 1 Malone & Drew

Kieran is up there with Conor. Different calibre from the one cloth. Manzys only position was inside, Kieran could do it at 3 or 14.

Replying To BrehonBlonde:  "He's a local, former player and involved last year as No2. He's a fit lad and knows plenty about S&C and a fair bit about football. And his greatest attribute will be on the budget."
Was he over their minor winning championship team?

The original post mentioned injury concerns and thats the point. i think if he was fully fit he'd have certainly picked up an all star at some point...btw walshe and mccarthy have all stars...dont know about your criteria for "monaghan greats" but thats enough for me and as i say hughes surely wouldve gotten one if he was fit

btw an all star isnt the only thing to make someone an all time great. finlay and darren hughes two good examples

Yes, no debate he was a magnificent footballer, but cant look back on his career with couldves, shouldves and Ifs.

To put Kieran Hughes in the same bracket as 3 time and 2 time all stars is crazy.

Who is a better footballer in their pomp, Kieran Hughes or Conor Mc Carthy ? Surely Mc carthy.

ohhhhh, that's a tricky one, Kieran Hughes is one of the most talented footballers I've seen in monaghan he could do all. could be hot or cold on his day yes but when on form easily the most skilled player in the county imo. Where as McCarthy I feel with scotstown yes he was always there but id argue until that all star year that form or player never really transferred over to the county.

Some serious revisionism going on on Kieran Hughes' career. An unbelievable footballer on his day. 'On his day' being the key phrase. How many big games did he have for Monaghan after that Ulster final 2013? I'd say you could count them on one hand, and you might not even need to use your thumb.
In disbelief that I've seen him mentioned in the same breath as McManus.

One man who has gotten very little credit in my opinion is Gavin McPhillips.

Has come on leaps and bounds since his Under 20's days and i feel was harshly treated by county set up this year.

Came on to great effect in the defeat to Donegal in Clones and wasn't seen again and the excuse given was that he got a roasting in a challenge game? Come on.....

Definitely should be staking his claim for a starting spot after some of the colossal man marking jobs he's done this club season. Arguably the most impressive club midfielder in the county from this season.

Don't forget in 2013 a certain Mattie McGleenan rang Kieran a few nights before the County final and told him he was to man mark a certain Clontibret forward. As they say, the rest is history…..

Yes, mark the clontibret forward who was one of the greatest. The clontibret forward wasnt rang to go out and mark Kieran Hughes

Shouldn't be spoke of in the same breath. Conor McManus certainly one of the greatest Monaghan club players ever. Put in a shift every day for club and county.
