So what's your suggestion that we should do? I'm all ears….

Pat your mortgage and still try to be a decent person who makes ethical decisions. Is that unreasonable?

That does not really answer my question. I do that already and I believe I'm a good person.

To say you're a good person is a hell of a statement. What measurement criteria are you using? Full disclosure, I am not a good person. I am a flawed person who's trying very hard to make good choices but continually makes mistakes so it's not my intention to judge or lecture you. I'm simply saying the language you use seems to absolve you of any duty to make good choices but maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Think you are being a bit hard on that lad Doyler

Not that lad in particular. It's an attitude that in my opinion causes a great deal of harm. If working people can't come together for the common good we're at nothing. I will however take your advice and drop it. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 4019 - 07/11/2025 23:10:40 2643451 Link 0 |

Life too short to be worrying about if you're a good or bad person. We all have our faults but nobody is a saint. However most people are good people. In 100 years nobody will even remember we existed.

Therein lies the key difference I suppose. I'd be of the view that in 100 years we'll still exist just not here. All the best

For a good person? Somebody who always does the right thing. I know loads of people who've done good things, but a good person is a bold statement by my definition. Let he who's without sin cast the first stone and all that

A good person is someone who 'always' does the right thing? If that's the case, there isn't a good person on earth. Stop good lad. I know plenty good people. They aren't perfect (nobody is), but they live a good life and look after others. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2626 - 08/11/2025 20:21:52 2643564 Link 3 |

I agree with that. The only good person ever was crucified.

Not sure you can say he was the only good person ever. He certainly was one of them though.

Is it not true to say Mary was equally as good a person when they were both on earth, also not doing bad stuff is another way of doing good.

Is Kevin Bakhurst going to impose Ryan Tubridy on the long suffering RTE listenership again ? This London based gig of his seems to have flopped or tanked. I don't see any of the other Irish stations queuing up to engage his services. Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 1917 - 10/11/2025 09:47:37 2643803 Link 0 |

This conversation has taken a turn. That depends on whether or not you believe Mary was born with original sin which is the essence of my point. We are all sinners. I don't agree with the second part. How many people do you know that don't do bad stuff? Try as I might I'm committing at least one of the 7 deadly sins every week. Sin was a religious concept to leave you perpetually with guilt and obeying the church is conveniently your only way of ridding yourself of the sin. Hey lads not sure ye realise but ye are all sinners, and you will never get into heaven without ridding yourself of the terrible sin you are all born with...how do we do that Patrick....oh the only way is joining my church and doing everything I tell you. If a salesman came to your door trying to pull that stunt you'd rightly call them a scam artist.

They wouldn't need to in most cases because you'd be indoctrinated from birth. For Holy Communion and Confirmation a child should learn some morals. In Ireland they're usually given a pile of money for both. What kind of values and morals does that reinforce?

I absolutely get what you're saying but I would say two things, 1. Human nature is generally selfish and greedy so it's perfectly logical. 2. I don't believe the church is necessary at all. I need God, I don't necessarily need the church although I do attend and personally enjoy it. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 4019 - 10/11/2025 15:11:59 2643874 Link 0 |
