New York Hurling

Replying To countyman2022:  "Its a great idea and hopefully it passes. They have nothing to train for as a collective group over there. Of course do have their own championship. Will give them something to aim for, create a buzz over there and definitely improve the standard there. Gives guts something to play for that are away."
Monaghan, Longford, Leitrim, Fermanagh, Louth, Lancashire and Warwickshire will all spend two months playing 6 rounds of games each in wet and windy conditions, only to have New York parachute in at semi-final stage to play max of two games in the better weather and lift the cup in Croker... and this is a great idea? Great for who?

How many lads from those 7 counties will be up for committing again the following year?

If competing in all rounds of the Lory Meagher is not possible (and for US teams it isn't), then the proposal to add NY to a competition with 7 rounds and knockout is not sustainable or serious. That doesn't diminish the great work done overseas to promote the game from Boston to Bangkok and beyond. But this is a serious competition, not a PR tool.

And so it has come to pass that Monaghan play New York this Saturday in TEG Cusack Park at 13:00... Winner plays Cavan the following weekend.

How many All Stars and All Ireland medals will the New York lads tog out with?

An absolute farce. Makes a mockery of the competition.

Are you all fearful that us Americans might just happen to beat the Irish at their very own game of hurling? It's not nice to see the 'fighting' Irish running so scared.

Does anybody know what the plan is if New York progress up the ranks? i.e. will they also be parachuted into the semi-finals or somewhere else in the latter stages of the Nickey Rackard, Christy Ring, Joe McDonagh?

This year really does seem unfair on Monaghan. Battling their way through five matches, only to possibly be denied a day out in Croke Park by a team that hasn't played in the same competition yet at all.

Is it not a bigger farce that the gaa were going to pull county teams with less than 5 senior club teams in the county ?new york will probably get promoted to christy ring or even joe mcdonagh ,and stay round that level id b thinking ..

That's not the issue. The issue is they shouldn't get a bye to a semifinal. They should earn a semifinal place like everyone else, and perhaps not in the bottom grade either.

Semi final stage every year until they get to Liam McCarthy or get fed up with winning medals and pull out.

By the time they get to Liam McCarthy I'm sure the central council will have come up with a genius plan around the structure of having New York travel over every year on a 3 week holiday. The costs must be huge. From what I've read they arrive in Ireland Thursday morning before this Saturdays game.

Exactly. The GAA need to concentrate on promoting Hurling in these weaker counties on this Island not worrying about New York and parachuting them in. A pointless exercise.

Just seen the New York panel, they look pretty stacked. They should have started in Joe McDonagh and find their level that way. Feel really sorry for Monaghan and Cavan.

There's no way NY should be competing in football or hurling championships here. Why do they get preference over a continental european selection for example or over another US city, or Canada, or Australasia. Far easier for a best of Europe 15 to come over to play games

Was there an alternative motion that New York could enter the McDonagh Cup instead?

This is madness. Cavan have been building properly for years, really doing things right, finally have a chance to win and they'll come up against this? The GAA really are a joke sometimes

Just looked there, no there wasn't. But you'd think it would be better for them to find their level that way, them taking 1 beating and dropping down for the following year to find their level wouldn't have the same impact this is going to have. It's going to turn a competition thst was for lesser counties into a farce

Serves no purpose whatsoever, a little jolly for lads that's all it is.
