An amalgamation of St. Pats, St. Farnans and Easkey beat Enniscrone by 31 points last night in the B u15 league. How would the CCC allow an amalgamation of three clubs be allowed to form in the first place and then to compete at that level? Surely they should be in A. I didn't agree when it was our own club amalgamating and I don't agree now. If you do, it should be straight to A, unless special permission is granted based on outstanding circumstances. Our young players deserve better. The last time I remember an amalgamation of that scale was when St. Molaise Gaels were formed.

What you have there is a senior along with 2 intermediate clubs that have formed an amalgamation, and still not competing in the A.

If you amalgamate 3 clubs at underage you should have to play A unless its clear you aren't too strong. 2 should be B minimum. I wonder why Easkey and Enniscrone didn't join together and have Pats/Farnans together at u15.
I was part of the amalgamation years at St Molaise- u14 with Cliffoney, u16 & u18 Grange/Cliffoney and u20 with St Molaise. I could write a book and they are plenty of positives but negatives too. There was definitely something lost and I wouldn't have been a massive fan of it at the time playing with rivals and politics but longer terms more benefits showed themselves. You do still lose players though for sure and the closer knit community factor.
I think more thought needs to go into grading underage teams as 31 pts win does nothing for anyone. Here in Canada underage Lacrosse teams play pre season grading tournaments to dictate level but some coaches tank their teams to get in at lower levels to make sure they win a cup. Up to association to regulate. CCC could solve it in a number of ways.

That amalgamation SHOULD win their competition. And if they do, so what? I'm sure a good group of lads but I don't think it will do them, or certainly their individual clubs any good. It isn't about this particular amalgamation but the whole process in the past 10 years. If we keep diluting pools, we can forget about clubs having second teams which we're already starting to see. Soon, clubs will fold altogether and have to amalgamate at adult level. There are also socio economic issues arising in recent times which are destroying rural football. I fear for GAA outside of 5/6 clubs in this county.

Madder thing is Pats and OMG amalgamated at minor this year too, why didn't they just go all the way up with it instead of cherry picking certain age groups like this seems to have done
And all amalgamations absolutely should be playing A football no real excuse for any of them not to

How are we feeling for Sunday folks? I'd take a performance akin to Galway last year, albeit it'll be much more difficult away from home. I really believe that we can stay with this Mayo team for 50/55 minutes but they will have a stronger bench. I was listening to a Mayo based podcast and they were extremely confident, kept repeating that it was a Div.1 team against a Div.3 team. Mayo can thank the gods the way their fixtures fell and it's only for the fact that they played Tyrone & Donegal when they did, that they are still in Division 1.
Mayo will probably have a keeper making his full debut, hopefully we can target him. I worry about our middle and our ability to win primary possession on our own KO's. Mayo play with a lot of Midfielders in their forward line so it will be a challenge for us. Hopefully we can target our own natural ball winners in our Half-forward line (Lally, Reilly & Spillane). Hopefully Cummins & Cannice are okay and they were just precautionary absentees against Leitrim, two of our most important players, especially around winning breaks. Cummins is our most physical player and holds the middle well from 6, as well as contributing a couple of points from play. As good as Nathan Mullen is, he is not a 6. Mayo only play with one out and out forward so we will need a physical presence to counteract their running game. We will need big performances from our middle 8 and more athletic players like Mullen, Towey, Spillane etc. I think Evan Lyons can give O'Donghue a good rattle. McGuinness may struggle with O'Sé but as Mayo don't run the ball, it should allow us time to filter players back and swarm him. If we get enough ball into our full forward line they will cause trouble. Optimistic that we can put in a good performance against Mayo team that is nowhere near what it was.
Delighted to see Eli back in the squad for the 20s tonight, a tough task against a good Galway team but hopefully they can get a better performance than last week.

Mayo will be hot favorites everywhere because of the D1 v D3 divide, anything under double digit win would probably be questioned by other counties. For us Sligo people knowing the young players we have and what Coolera showed this year, anything other than a close game will be disappointing. Been heavy underdogs gives us a chance but we need to reduce our mistakes significantly compared to the last time we played them.

A single digit result would be a good one in most people's eyes including my own but realistically it'd nearly need to be 4/5 points to be seen as good progress for Sligo. Mcstay will probably come out anyways and say his lads were too tired after the schedule of games if we do keep it low. It's an awful thing to admit this but ya have to factor in playing away from home. Yes we finished the league strong but there were games against easier opposition we left behind us.
Having said that Mayo can hardly be thinking they're fantastic after last Sundays performance but at home they will be fine this time around unfortunately. If it were Galway or Roscommon, ya might not see as many of the noisy neighbours wandering on to opposition pages the week before. Middle of the park will be a big challenge for us, as well as conditioning to a faster paced game.
