Great comeback today showing great courage and commitment. Not sure of the stats but we must have kicked at least 14 wides and left at least 3 goals behind us. Derry capitulated once the goal went in. Murphy imperious again, ably supported by conor and Shane o donnell and daire o baoill well deserved motm. Great to omff getting game time too. Personally I think it would be no harm to make league decider and let as many of the panel get game time as possible. Fr Tierney Park was rocking for the last 8 minutes, really enjoyable stuff. Great that at all donegal home games a solo singer is used for anthem...and kot yhe scratchy rubbish at other venues totalrecall (Leitrim) - Posts: 1011 - 02/03/2025 18:58:31 2594213 Link 1 |
I think it was 15 wides in the end by Donegal. Good to get a result, just a bit shocked that we did though, as our shooting was very poor for large periods. Bit like last season in the league to be fair, which we tightened up on come Championship. Murphy had a massive impact when he came on, but I thought the game was over early in the 2nd half. Expecting more key players to be rested against Tyrone, few more players to get a run out in that game, not expecting us to win that game now, I think we will be facing a very strong Tyrone side needing 2 points and we badly need to rest or rotate our squad, so expecting Tyrone to win that. If we had Murphy last year we might have won the All Ireland, different team when he is on the pitch, great footballer with brains and power to go with it. Great result and we missed a lot of good chances too, massive potential in this team if things go right. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3088 - 02/03/2025 21:39:18 2594288 Link 1 |
We were brilliant in middle of the pitch today considering we are still without Langan and McGee eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 95 - 03/03/2025 04:29:16 2594314 Link 0 |
My first and only thought walking out of Croke Park after the AI semi last year. Conor O'Donnell would have made a difference that day too, even if only coming off the bench. Great to have them both back this year. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1131 - 03/03/2025 06:50:24 2594315 Link 0 |
Yeah he is definitely a huge presence, and I think the new rules actually suit him better in a way, as there is more space open for him. Its important to rotate the squad further for the last two games to freshen them all up ahead of the Derry game, good to see Caolan McColgan and Odhran McFadden Ferry back. Twin Towers of Jason McGee and Michael Langan have missed the entire League campaign, with Langan only featuring for about 1 minute against Kerry. Getting those two back will be massive for us if we are to seriously challenge for the All Ireland. The new rules have basically killed the art of kick-outs, there is no time for tactical kickouts, keepers have to urgently just welly it up the field, which means teams with a larger percentage of high fielders distributed across the pitch will likely dominate the kickouts. And dominating the kickouts gives a huge advantage. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1290 - 03/03/2025 09:31:10 2594340 Link 0 |
Brilliant comeback yesterday. A victory looked highly unlikely with 15 minutes to go. But fair play to the lads, that was some finish. They are clearly very fit. Squad management will be vital now in the coming weeks as Championship looms. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9609 - 03/03/2025 10:02:14 2594349 Link 0 |
I think it is impossible to predict what will happen this year. One day if the breaks go your way from kickouts you could completely dominate and you could be cleaned out of it the next day if the breaks go the other way.Midfield is going to be a total lottery.Likewise with the 2 pointers, any team that gets lucky with a few speculative long range efforts could make hay.I don't like the 2 pointers because it promotes too much possession football around the arc.It creates too much indecision in players minds i.e. will we work the ball forward or keep it around the arc.It totally disrupts the natural flow of the game which is compounded by the 12 v 11.

Yeah the new rules have negated the art of the kickout, by flooding the middle 3rd for kickouts and having the 20 second rule, so it really is a lottery. Having a variety of players with high fielding ability might be the only way to improve percentages.

Yeah it is your kickouts that are the problem where you are not as inclined to attack the ball. You would nearly have to adopt the mindset that it is their kickouts you are after.
