Pat Gilroy Resigns From Croke Park Role

(Oldest Posts First)

Pat has resigned from his Croke Park Roll over threat to the games amateur status, he has also walked away from the GAA's risk and audit committee after GAA president Jarleth Burns recently raised the prospect of contracts for county managers.

- - - more trouble on the horizon. ??

Jarlath Burns has been flying more kites in the last 6 months than has been flown in the previous 6 years.
Pat Gilroy doesn't like the colour of this kite so took the opportunity to get off the bridge in case he got associated with something that's never going to happen.
Nothing to see, move on !!!

Could he not have stayed and fought his corner?

Fair play to Gilroy for stepping away if his issue is paid contracts for inter-county managers. This is more an issue for smaller counties but the Dubs would be the one county that could afford to bring in the best paid managers.

Gilroy is a good GAA man and is looking at the bigger picture, not just the interests of his own county.

He may also be looking at the bigger picture of who succeeds Jarleth Burns.

My memory of the show isn't completely fresh but the Sunday Game did a program about how to improve the future of the GAA for all counties, right in the midst of Dublin GAA cleaning up everything in football. Gilroy and Andy Mac from Meath were guests and Gilroy spent most of his time doubling down on ways to maximise more potential in Dublin while suggesting the rest of Ireland sort their own houses out. A GAA man he may be, but he didn't strike me as being overly interested in much outside his own blue flock.

Withdrawal of consent is sometimes the only means to turn bad situations around. Croke Park are masters at managing "change" in ways that are ultimately detrimental to us.

I support Pat Gilroy in his status. There is a clear divide in the GAA. In Croke Park and at intercounty level; professionalism is rampant and increasing. There is even a clear divide at intercounty level where some of the elite counties have a bigger background team than some weaker counties' squads. This isn't highlighted in the media by any one - there're all engaging in groupthink. It is only at club level; I'd say rural clubs that some of the old GAA values are still to be found. The day is fast approaching where there will be super clubs; they exist already competing for major club honours. It is already in full swing at intercounty level where we are close to players being paid just like the management team that are asking them to train harder. It will also lead to players transferring and playing for elite counties if they are deemed good enough. Croke Park is now a cash cow where they're more interested in renting out Croke Park than encourage gaels from all counties to aspire to play there. I think Pat Gilroy made the right decision as he seems to value what the GAA was, not what it is rapidly becoming.

His world is Vincents and Dublin. Not up to him to "sort out" Antrim.

This shows that in different situation he sees bigger picture.

Sure haven't managers been getting paid for years, club managers are well paid too, typical Ireland it's done under the table, the dogs in the street know it's going on.

It's posts like yours that festers the minds of other reasonable posters, let me add to that your not a true gael and far trom it with that attitude. Typical ireland it's done under the table you say, if that's the case I'd prefer to sit at a different table.

Maybe next time read what and why I posted the above instead of jumping in head first. I made the same point as you just did. He had tunnel vision for his own county only. It wasn't very insightful unless you believed Dublin should be achieving more than they already were and it didn't really add much to the overall theme of the programme.

I think he sees other sports as a rival unlike outside of Dublin. I heard he was totally against GAA letting rugby play in the grounds. I can imagine he wasn't to happy when Leinster rugby had more fans in croke park this year than the Dubs.

If that's supposed to be a dig at us, rugby also got same number of people as All Ireland finals.

He was right to oppose them having it. If soccer team wasnt so bad theyd be in too.
