Looking at the statement it doesn't actually say he has retired. It says he is stepping away for the coming season. Telling in my eyes. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8160 - 24/11/2024 19:18:52 2581051 Link 0 |
It's a strange one. You would think with the new rules this year might suit him? But maybe it's something to do with management?

Do you think if there was a different Mayo manager in charge, this decision (stepping away or retirement) would not have happened.? Still young enough and lots to offer a Mayo team imo. Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3987 - 24/11/2024 20:26:27 2581061 Link 0 |
I will just post again rather than reply separately lads if that's ok. Cillian is without doubt past his best and has had multiple injuries in the past few years so no guarantee he would be a starter. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8160 - 24/11/2024 21:31:03 2581072 Link 0 |
Fenton retiring at 31, O Connor stepping away for a year at the age of 32 and Murphy returning at the age of 35. Everything is gone a bit mad Taypot (Sligo) - Posts: 53 - 25/11/2024 10:24:50 2581128 Link 0 |
Cillian might not be the only Mayo player stepping away. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11412 - 25/11/2024 11:04:38 2581138 Link 1 |

Typical Mayo. More interested in sideshows and me feiners than shoulder to the wheel. Looking forward to O Horas retirement statement…yawn

Mayo county board only themselves to blame for sending out a questionnaire to the players and asking if they were happy with the current management not long after a last 16 exit in the championship.

He's only a few months older than Shane Walsh to be honest think it's prob time to move on from him anyway football wise he's huge mileage put in Ohora also would probably have moved on from anyway. mayo nvr short of good quality backs jm25 (Galway) - Posts: 1289 - 25/11/2024 16:44:17 2581208 Link 0 |
O'Hora gone now. Others not confirmed. If Cillian was talking a year out to travel or due to work commitments then that would have been stated. It's a massive two fingers to the current management setup. Mayo won't be doing anything in 2025. Relegation from Div 1 wouldn't be a shock. Backwards we are going.

I assume O'Connor met with management and wasn't happy with what he was told in terms of the game time he was likely to see in 2025? Would that be the general feeling?
