Two teams who have had underwhelming seasons. O Rourke seems to have regressed meath, they where somewhat decent under Mc entee and largely competive. While a fortunate goal against louth has probably glossed over a rough season for the farney men. It's very hard to see past a monaghan win given the scores meath have conceded, even offensiveley they haven't offered much. Monaghan by 5 / 6 but I hold off any predictions or PQF win based on our form this year. 222 (UK) - Posts: 849 - 12/06/2024 12:11:14 2550991 Link 0 |

I'd say it'll be Cork and Kerry looking at the map. Galway and Roscommon is long too

Ros borders 7 Counties. Leitrim Donegal border pretty short. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2297 - 12/06/2024 15:50:35 2551036 Link 0 |
shorest border between two counties in Ireland has to be Monaghan and Meath.. about 6km-7km in length. SouthMonMan (Monaghan) - Posts: 161 - 12/06/2024 16:03:50 2551040 Link 0 |
Meath and Offaly also has a short border. There are three neighbouring pairs of counties that you can't drive into without going into another county. Kerry and Clare. You have to go through Limerick. Wexford and Waterford. You have to go through Kilkenny. Louth and Down. You have to go through Armagh. But this will change soon as work started on a bridge that will link Omeath in Louth to Warrenpoint in Down.

Looking forward to the game. Just like Cavan I look forward to it as a big Derby. You couldn't beat the by enough (I know we diddentbeat cavan and I'm still disgusted) for me it's a good riveraly as I'm thatside of monaghan and I work with quite a few Meath people and for many years they taught they were the dogs B**** . You can't beat the derby's for Bit of heart from supporters and players. Hon Monaghan win by 3 farneygael (Monaghan) - Posts: 300 - 13/06/2024 04:57:58 2551104 Link 0 |

Donegal and Sligo don't border each other but would be known as neighbouring counties due to close proximity

Yeah due to Leitrim having the shortest coastline in Ireland. While it's neighbour Donegal has the longest coastline.

I am from the far side of the county, but worked in Carrick for a while in the late 90s when Meath were at the pomp. Before I worked there I didn't even know we bordered Meath and was surprised how many Meath people you would run into around Carrick. Jeez back then they were hard to deal with. For a small county I think there is a distinct divide in Monaghan if run a line from around Ballybay over to Blayney. North of that the accent changes and the interactions are with Fermanagh, the Cavan area around Redhills/Cootehill, Tyrone and North Armagh area around Middletown. Those areas always came into Monaghan for social occasions so there are lots inter-marriages etc. South of that line the interactions are mostly with South Armagh around Cross, Louth, North Meath and Cavan around Kingscourt/Balieboro. You would meet loads from those areas in the pubs around Carrick whereas you would rarely meet them in Monaghan town or Clones Louth always struck me as the same with a North/South divide. Up around Dundalk they definitely look North socially and culturally, whereas down round Drogheda they looked more towards Dublin/Meath TheHunter (Monaghan) - Posts: 18 - 13/06/2024 10:17:34 2551128 Link 1 |
Tipperarys borders and GAA rivalries really are interesting, obviously to the south is kilkenny, West Galway but back up towards the midlands they have a longstanding rivalry with offaly. I actually think some clubs in offaly operate in tipp but open to correction. 222 (UK) - Posts: 849 - 13/06/2024 10:43:45 2551137 Link 0 |

Wexford and waterford (sunny south East) don't actually touch each other. Both counties would be aligned. 222 (UK) - Posts: 849 - 13/06/2024 12:10:07 2551169 Link 0 |
This GAA forum seems to be morphing into a Geography/Cultural forum, i'm not complaining though, its interesting. SouthMonMan (Monaghan) - Posts: 161 - 13/06/2024 12:24:12 2551174 Link 0 |
Interesting, maybe south monahan folk also felt they where superior to the North mons due to the close proximity of the Pale culture nearby!!

thats a crazy stat about lietrim, that you cant go from north to south of the county without leaving it. i always thought cavan and roscommon seem to be culturally fairly close even though they dont touch. theres a strange thing around meath westmeath border areas where they actually are placid enough when playing football against each other as the areas that straddle the border for 80% of the middle are not massive football stongholds and hurling would be number one in those areas, all the way from Castlepollard/kilskyre to delvin /athboy down to raharney/killyon, they would be places where a hurling match would always be on tv in a pub over football and where people would regulalry go to see munster championhsip games in thurles etc. id say theres very few other strong football counties (div 2) where this would happen or am i wrong? its a big area basically mullingar east to kells and trim . dickie10 (UK) - Posts: 827 - 13/06/2024 14:19:40 2551208 Link 0 |
