As a little nipper in the late 70s I remember the da and uncle bringing myself and the cousins to the Canal end and we had those rattlers that you could swing around and the tissue hats on with the county name stapled onto a cardboard peak. We used to sing.... 'We are the D-U the D-U-B-S we come from Dublin and we are the best". But then we would get hockeyed by that great Offaly team and the singing would stop and the Dubs' gallop would come to a halt in Leinster in June. Happy days though. Hard to get a chant going on All Ireland final day when the fella beside you is from Kildare and the buck on the other side is reading the programme trying to figure what counties are playing. You really need to be in the hill for a chant. If I heard anyone chanting about Andy being on fire I'd pack it in and go home. At least I'd get a seat on the Drumcondra to Maynooth train.

Haha true that about the spectator fans at All-Irelands. I've a ticket myself for the hurling next week . Afraid to open my mouth in case any of the Kilkenny/Tipp bucks hear the accent and realise I'm an imposter who stumbled upon a ticket. You never know , if he himself and Mayo are playing well I can see a few drunken teenagers starting it up GameOfTyrones (Tyrone) - Posts: 469 - 27/08/2016 18:28:06 1906711 Link 0 |

I can remember Strabane wans on the walk to Clones chanting West West West Tyrone, which serves to mock East East East Belfast. Amusing. Suas Sios (None) - Posts: 1558 - 27/08/2016 21:10:06 1906748 Link 0 |
The fact that the fans are segregated with their fellow supporters means that its easier to get it going too.

I do recall in the 70s when dubs won an all Ireland, the fans sang "you'll never walk alone" on the pitch in front of the Hoganstand. sneachta (None) - Posts: 414 - 28/08/2016 10:06:20 1906836 Link 0 |

There has to be some credibility to a chant.....

GAA games don't really lend themselves to fans singing songs as there is too much happening on the field of play to keep the fans occupied.I do recall Limerick fans on Hill 16 singing 'Limerick you're a lady" during the 1980 hurling final and thinking it wasn't really an inspiring song. Some county names are such thats they just are not suitable for chanting either but others are like Wex--ford! Water--ford! Don-e-gaal! May--ooo! and of course my own favourite Gaal---way! Barnowl94 (Galway) - Posts: 3150 - 28/08/2016 12:45:26 1906877 Link 0 |
