I saw a post on another fourm about "superclubs" which interested me. How many and what clubs out there could and would beat average/decent county teams. DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 10:26:42 1745818 Link 0 |
Donegal club football is not as passionate as the club scene in other counties in Ulster and thats why there is so few clubs doing well in Ulster. Clubs winning a senior title are generally happy enough. If a club was winning senior titles every year like Cross then you could see them wanting to push on a bit in Ulster as part of a natural progression. I don't know if you would count Nemo in that. When was the last time they won Cork never mind Munster? Dr Crokes I think could be included on that list. Although they haven't won an All Ireland they always seem to be there or there abouts. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 01/07/2015 11:05:10 1745842 Link 0 |
Which of those clubs would beat a county team and who would they beat? DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 11:25:36 1745853 Link 0 |
ormondbannerman P.S this is NOT a dig at any county team, rather a debate about the huge quality of some club teams. Just clearing that up incase anyone gets the wrong impression :) DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 11:26:48 1745854 Link 0 |
They won Munster in 2010 gotmilk 6th title in 10 years on top of 8 cork title in 10 years. Must still be a bit of pedigree about them. As i was saying I dont know these squads fully and they where just examples at the top of my head of famous good clubs. DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 11:29:49 1745855 Link 0 |
Perhaps someone could define 'superclub' before this goes any further. I'd define it on size which isn't necessarily correlated to success. I wouldn't consider St Vincent's as a super club or Ballymun for that matter. Hugely successful and steeped in tradition and hugely involved in Dublin senior teams are Vins but the only so called super club in Dublin in my view would be Kilmacud Crokes. And perhaps the primary contributing factor to it is geography. seany16 (Dublin) - Posts: 1658 - 01/07/2015 11:50:37 1745870 Link 0 |
I have laugh at the fact that we're not as good as we once were according to the OP!!! Maybe he meant to put that beside Nemo! If you are looking at current 'superclubs' then obviously you have ourselves, St Vincents, St Brigids Roscommon and Dr Crokes. These 4 teams have been the most consistent over the last 10-12 years in terms of county and provincial championships and between three of them have won 6 of the last 10 AI clubs. The likes pf St Galls have done well county wise as have Nemo but having really pushed on with only 1 Provincial win for Nemo and 2 for St Galls and St Galls won the AI once. The Dublin teams like Kilmacud will generally always produce a good team and will potentially challenge and the Mayo and Derry Champions are always strong but they are not consistent enough to be pushed up to the 'superclub' level. sorry about the confusion. Superclubs may have been a bad term. More about clubs who could beat a county team. DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 11:55:07 1745877 Link 0 |
Sorry RangerDanger I wasnt trying to offend. Only reason I said that is because you havent appeared in a final since 2012. I aknowledge they are still a great team just not AS good of late. Im no expert in the Armagh club sene but they never seem to have much competition. Since 95 or 96 has anyone really challenged them? 10 out of Armaghs 14 ulsters are from 1 club. Derry have 13 and 7 different winners. In the last 20 years we have had 5 different winners. I think this is very healthy :) DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 12:03:50 1745888 Link 0 |
Right thats a totally different question. I figured you were asking about playing numbers, facilities and revenue. If you were then Ballyboden would be up there and Parnells. Nemo Rangers is a relatively small club but with good pedigree and facilities. Na Piarsaigh in Limerick are on the way to being one if they get to build a new Clubhouse and bar. Theyve a catchment area of about 25000 but rugby is strong in their area. Not sure of many others.. Kilmacud is one too I guess, maybe De la Salle has the potential in Waterford. If you take away super clubs and put in - what club teams would compete for promotion in division 4 in the NFL I would say, on the last couple of years form, the following from my own county: GAAHattrick (Dublin) - Posts: 278 - 01/07/2015 12:24:26 1745912 Link 0 |
I would love a typr of Supercup between the AI winner and club AI winner DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 01/07/2015 12:30:21 1745920 Link 0 |
Going off topic a bit here. A good club team would compete with a Div 3 team. St Vincents v Portlaoise leinster final 2013 was as good as any Div 3 match that same year.. quote Eugene Magee. crikey (Australia) - Posts: 355 - 01/07/2015 12:49:04 1745940 Link 0 |

Id say Corofin or Slaughtneil would beat Carlow, Waterford, NY, London, and maybe the likes of antrim or fermanagh. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 01/07/2015 13:17:10 1745964 Link 0 |

Lads the notion that a top club team would beat a county team are fanciful to say the least. I know we have played county teams over the years but it would be rare that we would have played full teams and beaten them. If a club team had the training facilities, S & C budgets etc then I reckon the top 3-4 teams would beat anything in Div 4 and a good few of Div 3 but after that the level increases dramatically. As it stands, given the level of training going into most county teams, then it is highly unlikely that the club teams would compete. Maybe in a one off game but certainly not consistently.
