Is Henry Shefflin really the best ever ?

as henry himself said
that display he gave against galway in the all Ireland final
where he almost on his own kept killkenny in that game
that performance had everything you look for in a great player

Dessie
DJs performances in those matches epitomised his faults, running up big scores against bad teams. Although the 2002 scoreline was reasonavly close, there was never any doubt that kilkenny were by far the better team and would win easily. When the crunch came, in the big games (ai final 92 93 98 98, etc) he went missing com pletely , notwhitstanding two points scored against a beaten galway in 93. No amount of shooting ducks in a barrel in 2000 2002 could change that. Shefflin was way more consistent, although noone is perfect 100% of the time.
I never saw that 2012 match again after the day it was played, but from my memory shefflin won an incredible amount of ball, and tackles and was the only player in the latter half of the pitch that turned up for kilkenny

Shefflin was a superb player. I've watched hurling a long time and my favourites were Christy Ring, Babs Keating, Tony Wall, Mick Roche, Ray Cummins and Tony Doran.
Shefflin would be in their company. He orchestrated Kilkenny's attack.
Would like to see a game between the Tipp team of 1964 and Kilkenny team of 2007.

Shefflin was consistently excellent,Mr Reliable for Kilkenny and his club.A truly great hurler. But to say he was the best ever is stretching things a bit I feel.

Tipp beat Kilkenny in 1964 all ireland 5-13 to 2-8. They were a truly dominant team of that era. The game now is faster, lighter sliotar, more rules...but i think Tipp of 1964 would beat KK of 2007.
Teak tough full back line..Doyle, Maher, Carey...excellent midfield English/Roche and goalscoring full forward line Keating/McKenna/Mclouglin.
These plus Devaney,Jimmy Doyle, Nealon, Gaynor,Burns and Tony Wall would win it for Tipp.

Shefflin did have the advantage of being a great player on a great team.
Joe Canning is definitely as good as Henry, if not better.
Another great Galway player of former years was John Connolly (1971).

Henry was unbelievable but as he himself admits a lot of what gave him greatness was through hard work and practise. It's hard to define greatness but I wouldn't say he was naturally brilliant in the way DJ Carey was. Leaving aside the three Galway JC's Connolly, Cooney and Canning because I'm somewhat biased anyway I'd have Frank Cummins (the KK version) JBM, DJ and Brian Whelehan ahead of him in terms of natural flair, technique and ability.
