Rugby is not the 3 or 4 main sport in Ireland, or is it the biggest professional sport in Ireland. The reason nobody complains about the coverage other sports gets is no sports gets the coverage rugby gets and i am not surprised that you Ormond would think that Winston Churchill is your hero. ros1 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1211 - 22/11/2014 11:22:18 1674122 Link 0 |

Can be an annoying old fart but I appreciate what people like about him, to summarise I have to say I'm a fan :) realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8753 - 22/11/2014 14:08:26 1674180 Link 0 |
In fairness as some said he winds people up. newstalk my fav station too but george pisses off rugby people more than anything else. He can be so negative at times whereas almost every rugby person in the media tends to be overly positive. He is very uneducated regards GAA so don't ever expect to here much sense from him! Hooky's show is a drivetime/political/ whatever you're having yourself show. He can talk about what he wants and doesn't have to bow to anyone if he wants to talk about rugby. People don't seem put out if Matt Cooper talks economics or Pat Kenny is more involved when he covers an Engineering topic. He is a wind up merchant but that's what I like about him. Has great rugby knowledge and often will play to the audience giving views that me might not agree with just to get a reaction. The man is 73, has more liberal views than many more than 50 years younger. So what if he admires Churchill? He was a brilliant, obviously troubled, politician. Can he not admire a British politician. I love the GAA as much as anyone but have no time for anyone saying that just because they're our national sports thst every media and broadcasting outlet needs to keep GAA at the top of their coverage all of the time. In 2014 we should be a lot more broadminded than complaining about a 73 year old talking about tge sport he loves GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7986 - 22/11/2014 15:29:16 1674193 Link 0 |
Churchill was a phenomenal war time leader and supported a united Ireland after the war - As he said to Dulanty " I said a few words in parliament the other day about your country because I still hope for a united Ireland. You must get those fellows in the North in, though; you can't do it by force." He was probably correct...he had a surprising affinity for the Republic bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4649 - 22/11/2014 15:37:28 1674197 Link 0 |
Yep, sure didn't Churchill give Ireland the Black & Tans and the country came to love them so much they are still talked about nearly 100 years later! A hero to all Irish men for that act of generosity alone! The ignorance and self-loathing of some on here is a sight to behold. Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 22/11/2014 15:51:01 1674202 Link 0 |
Rugby is the top professional sport in Ireland. More contracted full time professional players in Ireland than the soccer. Unfortunately for the soccer lads most League of Ireland players are part-time and some of the full-time lads draw the dole in the off-season. Thanks Soma - I can see why Hook loves his work bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4649 - 22/11/2014 16:43:17 1674210 Link 0 |
Churchill said a lot of things about Ireland, most of it BS, no one in their right minds could trust him, neither republican or orangeman, a man who sent thousands callously to their deaths. Hook is actually an awful lot like his hero, his "sporting" intellect is pretty limited outside a very narrow field of vision. To the likes of him playing GAA is inconceivable and if they do they become irrelevant. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4953 - 24/11/2014 10:41:56 1674496 Link 0 |

George played hurling and soccer in his youth. So what if he admires Churchill. There's people that admire some aspects of Franco, Mussolini, Hitler who were completely corrupt but great politicians in their own way. Doesn't make you a fascist if you can learn from history. People are entitled to their own opinions rather than follow old-fashioned sheep party lines like their ancestors. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7986 - 24/11/2014 14:33:09 1674564 Link 0 |
