Inishowen has made massive strides in recent years, im not too sure which is stronger now, soccer or GAA, but until recent decades it was defs soccer. It is because its part of the Derry Diocese and the church tried to suppress GAA in the city in 1921 to discourage links with militant republicanism. Therefore Inishowen sport reflected in a large way what was being played in the city.
Derry City would be soccer by a long way but since the 90s the GAA is making a comeback in in area where its all began within County Derry.

In Cork I am not sure if we have any areas that are really really weak in GAA. Cork city and surrounds provide the bulk of the players for senior and underage teams in both codes at present (though the football team with have a few chaps from out in the wilds). Certainly soccer and rugby are big in places but nearly all the clubs in the city and surrounds have brilliant facilities with two or three pitches, a bar etc

County towns like Mallow, Fermoy, Bandon are probably underachievers for their size but all have brilliant facilities (if an amateur club in the country of any description has better facilities than Mallow, I'd like to see it - Clonakilty is probably its next rival) and have supplied players to several county teams in both hurling and football and different age levels.

I am not too sure how much they love GAA in Monkstown, Crosshaven and Kinsale but Kinsale has a decent intermediate side and they are surrounded by very strong GAA areas.

In east Cork which probably has the largest population now, hurling is king (Cobh probably soccer though)

Handball ref; It was a bit tongue in cheek, I know the lay of the land around there. Burt especially would draw loads from Inishowen

Drum village in co. Monaghan- its on the back road to Clones but you would do well to get a flag (or a drink) there on a championship Sunday. You could make the case for Carrickmacross too- second biggest town in the county but no senior championship since 1916 or something.8 mile up the road and Blayney have 35 senior titles!

You are absolutely right Cued.

We should all fold up and bow before the might that is Crokes, Boden, Na Fianna and Vinnies.

We are so not worthy :-)

Rather than waffling on about giving up hurlingdub why not tink of all those areas the GAA cud tap into.We have a huge amount of scope for improvement in promoting our games in some parts of the capital.Imagine how good we cud be then.Thered be no stopping us!

Where the GAA is strong in Dublin it's very strong

Where it's weak, it's sadly almost non existent... vast swaths of the southside of Dublin fits this bill

Massive chunk of population with little or NO interest in GAA... they wouldn't know what Jim Gavin / Anthony Daly looked like!

Take where I live as a stronghold... the spine of GAA in Dublin

Approx 10 minutes drive of my house give or take 5 minutes either way... you have...

Ballymun Kickhams

Erins Isle

Na Fianna

St Vincents

(All of the above have played in AI finals in the last 20 years)

Craobh Chiarain

Parnells

Whitehall Colmcilles

(All of the above clubs have supplied multiple household names to the cause)

Then you also have multiple secondary schools that play both hurling / football

That's a strong hold... but again... as already stated by previous posters on this thread

You have a massive slice of the Dublin population who are not into GAA

That's just the sad fact...

Massive respect for the Southside clubs flying the flag amongst the blue bloods west Brits... ;)

They too have brought some major silverware back to the capital!!

x2

The area is not a stronghold, what I would take a stronghold to mean is - an area that the majority of kids growing up partake in Gaelic games. This is 100% not true of North Inner City. I would say a lot of them play in school for a couple of matches to get off class.

Th big clubs are usually a good marker for where the strongholds are, this is why I mentioned them in this thread.

There are large parts of Dublin where there are hardly any Irish people Jimbo. I'm afraid we are fighting a losing battle against race to the bottom employers.

_______

Yeah Dublin is like no other Irish county

A unique little country within a country in many ways

Many variable makes up Dublin... one part of that is GAA

But there are many, many other parts...

We sometimes get judged unfairly considering such facts

Gaahattrick

I live in Drumcondra

The Rathmines of the Northside ;)

Oh yes be proud, for we live in the very heart land of Dublin GAA

One of the best GAA strongholds in the country

Look at that list of clubs within a couple mile radius

Throw in DCU sports grounds... oh yes. We're GAA people in these parts

Sorry only read the first page but just to clear one thing up Neilstown is part of Clondalkin so just say Clondalkin please cause we are struggling out here altogether.

How many from Neilstown are playing with Round Towers?Id say less than 1 Clondalkindub so im afraid Neilstown most certainly comes under the non GAA stronghold bracket.

But it's one estate in north Clondalkin? People who live in Ronanstown don't say there from Neilstown or likewise with people from Quarryvale. Barely any play for towers from the Dutch village or bawnogue . We've as many playing for us from north Clondalkin as we do bawnogue or Dutch village , there all part of Clondalkin so don't know where your going with that.

Can't think of anywhere really in Cork except maybe Cobh for soccer and some city spots. Football struggles big time in East Cork though, the same for hurling west of Bandon.

Theres nobody from Greenfort,Shancastle,Harelawn,Ronanstown,Moorefield,Rowlagh,Neilstown,St Marks playing for Towers i would imagine.Call it north clondalkin or neilstown or whatever but the participation of GAA in that area is non existent.Once u cross that railway bridge tis like a different world.Towers get all their members/players from the likes of St Johns,Cappamore,Moastery Road,Boot Road, parts of Bawnogue,Woodford and Dutch Village etc as u well know.Neilstown/North Clondalkin which comprises of those estates mentioned is a non GAA stronghold.

Palmerstown woods not north Clondalkin anymore? The last Towers player to play for Dublin Derek Murray is from there ffs. Are you from Clondalkin yourself?
