Sky Sports' GAA - I love it!!

Sky haven't even shown a match yet and already they're making basic errors all over the shop. How much effort would it take to run some text past an Irish person before broadcast?

That approach worked well for Brian Moore on ITV during Euro 88 when Packie Boner was playing in goal for us.

How hard would it be for RTE to actually find out if the Offaly footballers really are managed by Andie MacDowell? Hopefully they're now aware that Meath and Westmeath are not interchangeable and that Louth played the latter in their first round match too?

Are they though? Yes, the error yesterday evening was embarrassing, probably compounded by the fact that Kilkenny couldn't have less to do with football, as well as getting the province wrong. That was a worse error than Jim Whyte struggling with names, I'd certainly forgive him that. Other than that? Errors all over the shop? No.

I've always been a fan of RTE's hurling coverage, because its panellists seem to enjoy a game between middle ranking teams, something the football panellists can't seem to do, and have no problem promoting their sport. The football panellists are witheringly negative. I think the days of Spillane and Brolly are numbered. Either that, or they actually have to say something positive about football, which is a bloody good game, lest we forget! Even with the black card, it's constant focus on questionable refereeing as opposed to what the card is doing right (and it's doing a lot right). There's a lot to like about RTE's coverage, and it would be a sad day that they don't have coverage to our games, but the football panellists have to buck up.

While they have made errors, Sky have actually shown enthusiasm. Brian Carney deserves a massive pat on the back for what was a very articulate and feel-good endorsement of hurling, and a very adept run-through on the black card. Let the naysayers get the knives out, but Sky are brilliant sports broadcasters. They'd promote tiddlywinks with vigour if they were broadcasting it!

I thought the SKY intro was good. They are promoting GAA and partly to a new audience.

Where RTE have been consistently negative SKY were positive.

Amazingly, when showing showing examples of black card offences they managed to do it without any clips of Tyrone. Having watched RTE I wasn't sure that was possible ;)

Although most people think it was a wind up, Brian Moore was actually 100% correct in what he said! The Bonner surname is one of the most common in Donegal and we pronounce it Bone-er, not Bon-ar... Even if it's spelt Bonar, we pronounce it Bone-er. I genuinely don't think that it was intended as a wind up!! I remember when Badille and skinner showed the clip of this a few years back and were in stitches laughing and me as a Donegal kid finding nothing strange about it whatsoever!!

I was a bit dubious about the whole SKY deal, but that intro is really good. It puts a bit of pressure on the RTE pundits, I think. Spillane and O'Rourke will have to come up with better analysis than "Things were always better in our day"!

RTE are forever making mistakes. Both on radio and TV they cannot get Odhran Macniallias's name properly. It is obviously an Irish name; all they got to do is ask some one from Donegal. Although sounding weird- we do pronounce it Bone- er.

AGAIN...relax folks! The people who compile the results, news & stats on their Sky Sports News channel would be totally green (excuse the pun) to GAA & Irish geography, as most English people are. That clip was just a piece on the Sports News by way of introduction to the GAA championship & Carney came across very well, in my opinion. Let's see how it goes on Saturday, eh?!!

Here here keeper, and its nice to see that theres a majority of posters on here, not necessarily banking the drum for Sky but at the very least prepared to give them a chance and then to analyse the coverage. Its positivity thats been missing from the standard fare coverage for years now and its time that we bucked the trend and started to give it the coverage it deserves, starting this weekend.

must be very hard considering you cant even get it right. Or does the Ulster hurling championship not count?

Hill:

Here on the Sky Mutual appriciation thread the only negatives can be said about RTE. Even the misprounciation of common names spoken in a strange local dialect get denouced as evidence of RTE's incompatence. Aside from the fact IF you pronounced a name like "Bone-er" in Dublin it does conjure something in the mind close to a certain part of the male anatomy.

So the only Hoganstand news article that gets any comment on this thread is a positive one:
http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=217755" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=217755

In fact the advertising "Intro" is hailed as evidence of this superior presentation.

While the possibly negative article:
http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=217755" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=217755
[Which for a big GAA club to show 14 hurling/football games they fork out €394 per month!!] - Clearly a lot here (and those in Sky itself) have never set foot inside a GAA club

This air of unreality is akin to North Korea. And then to tell us all we need to have an "open" mind just as refreshing as theirs!

At least when RTE show a match everyone in this country will be able to comment on it.

There's a big difference between not allowing negative opinion of the Sky coverage and actually giving them a chance. Some people are hopping on every little thing they do wrong and turning it into World War Two. I'm perfectly entitled to my opinion that Sky will do a good job, as I've based it on the fact that I've rarely if ever seen them do a bad job presenting any sport, without being accused of being a cheerleader. I amn't. If I don't like their coverage, I will say it. I too baulked at the Connacht Senior Football fiasco, but I noticed a lot of the people bringing that up made no mention of Carney's excellent appraisal of our games. I can see some people have made their minds up before any coverage has been broadcast, and aren't for turning.

Yeah agree arock
Like they are supposed to be a sports channel so how so they not have time to make sure when that caption is being done its correct surely if they are going to present Gaa they should have an Irish person to make sure what they are putting out is correct
