Tyrone v Down

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Jesus it didn't take long for the anti-tyrone bile to start up! We'll take it and move on, siege mentality! I expect a big performance Saturday night in newry and another onslaught of rubbish on Sunday.

And would people from both side stops going on about referees and diving. The only reason people are singling out Cavanagh is because he is such a special talent and every one of you would give your left arm to have him. Laverty is renowned for "winning frees" when ever anyone goes near him!

This is the type of atmosphere Tyrone traditionally enjoy, under attack from the GAA establishment, RTE and assorted media outlets, fans from other counties, we thrive in this environment and Saturday evening will kick start our championship. Tir Eoghain Abu!

It is indeed Brend, in fact though it does very little for the game one might almost think that it would be in Mickey Hartes interest to create such an atmosphere...
Regarding Maginn not getting a black card, I can only presume that Coldrick was unsure if McVeigh had also contributed to bringing Donnelly to the ground and so didn't issue the card, though I have no idea why he didn't play advantage.

That's great Brend. So no excuses if Tyrone lose then?

Hopefully it will be a great game played at championship pace for the full 70 minutes. Our players should have renewed confidence. Last week I think they believed the hype around this Tyrone side. Not hype from within Tyrone itself, but media hype that they are AI contenders. Tyrone are gonna have to live with such hype while Harte remains in charge. Tyrone will always produce decent footballers, like Down. But this Tyrone side is no where near as good as the Tyrone team of the last decade. I feel they are there for the taking, and Down have every chance winning tomorrow. The players are so familiar with the Newry pitch and surroundings. That said, Down will need to produce a 'championship' performance. We can't afford another sluggish half of football like last week our Tyrone will put us away this time!

AN DUN ABU

The major fact is that the Tyrone team from last week played poorly but was also not the team that played during the league. There was numerous players on the starting 15 that shouldn't have been and hopefully tomorrow Tyrone will have their best 15 on the pitch from the start.

No excuse if Tyrone lose and it would be great if this game matches up to the reply of 2008 which was a great game played in a great atmosphere. Under Mickey's rule in more cases than not Tyrone usually improve in the replay's and learn from the first game eg 2003 v Derry & Down, 2005 Cavan and even 2005 v Armagh for the All - Ireland semi-final,2005 Dublin. Tyrone probably do not have the players of 2003-08 but like several other counties could win Ulster and a tight win in Newry would help bring them on.

I'm picking Down for this one for the simple reason that they are a completely different animal in Newry then they are way from home.

Should be a great game.

...Is Reilly not the man who sent Martin Penrose off at half time in the infamous Tyrone Monaghan Quarter final last year - a game remembered for the Sean Cavanagh tackle or non tackle? Simply - In my opinion Reilly blundered in that game...

...Tyrone have shipped criticism in recent years but many of the big calls have also went against them. Thin back to last years All-Ireland semi final defeat to Mayo, Peter Harte was taken out and no action...

This is a fairly subjective view of proceedings. Reilly blundered by sending off Penrose for throwing a punch? Peter Harte "taken out" with what most people viewed as a fair shoulder to shoulder challenge?

An individual can still support their team but retain a degree of objectivity.

I think the Presidents comments are an absolute disgrace. Mickey Harte has been one of the most positive commentators on Gaelic football...

I'm not sure I'd agree with this. Harte has been very vocal about an awful lot of things throughout his tenure and very little of it has been positive.

Agreed, Micky Harte only said exactly what everyone else was saying, there must be consistency in the application of the black card. This is the opinion of all right thinking, logical people...

It's hard to argue with Harte in this case. There is a near common consensus that McGinn should have got a black card for his tackle last weekend. However, Harte seems to have a gripe about a lot of things and is not slow to voice his opinion about these. After a while, people just hear the white noise as opposed to the message.

I think Quinn is right in his opinion that Harte is overly negative in his comments but I think he showed very poor judgement in calling Harte out over this particular comment when I believe Harte has a valid point.

Anyone else think its time Mickey let Stevie go?
For such a legend, he is a shadow of his former shadow at this stage and offers little

People are forgetting....

The two big decisions that Cormac Reilly made in the Tyrone v Monaghan game last year, He got RIGHT!!

The red card for Penrose was nailed on for hitting the Monaghan fella a dig.

And the reward of the free and yellow card was the right decision going by the rule book too.

I thought Stevie looked sharp when he came on against Down and I definitely think he's a good option to have on the bench. He's just been ridiculously unlucky with injuries though he had surgery earlier in the year. He's only had one injury-free championship since 2005 which is a shame in a way.

I really don't understand the anti-Tyrone bias. I'm a Antrim man, but I see what they have done for the profile of Ulster football. We have all benefited form their success a little. large portions of the southern media would have preferred Kerry to have cleaned the boards of All Irelands in the noughties, rather than delight that Ireland at last had a genuine challenger. What a dull procession it would have been each September if it hadn't been for Tyrone, and I am certainly grateful for that.

I will hear no argument from anyone about the fact that Mickey Harte is on of the greatest managers the game has seen. But he is also a pain to listen to. To call him a "positive commentator" is a joke. He moans, complains & gives out right left & centre while seeing non of the faults in his own team. Arsene Wenger would be the nearest comparison I could make.
Mickey has a neck on him complaining about referees when his own team makes life as difficult as possible for them with diving & what not else.

Now, not for a minute am I saying that any of the top teams are angels, they aren't, but Mickey is in a class of his own when it comes to whinging & if there was an All Ireland in it he would coast it every year.

I believe that Down had their chance and blew it. MH & Tyrone wont be caught napping again.

Personally I think the President was ill advised making inflammtory comments about Mickey Harte. After all Harte had merely challenged the referees to imbue their decision making with a little consistency. Isn't that what we all wish to see? I feel that Eugene Magee has brought on the perfect storm, in a clumsy effort to stifle what he and the FRC saw as negative tactics from some..ehm (Ulster) counties. Even the council hearing was flawed, with objectors being hi-jacked with video evidence, with no opportunity for rebuttal. I believe that Liam, who obviously backs the black card, is sore that it's not quite working out, and thought he would have a go at Harte, because he had the temerity to question it. All a bit too Stalinistic for me.

Ha Ha. Some would need to take my comments with a pinch of salt. I'm sure Reilly will do his best to ref what will be a fiercely competitive Ulster derby. Hoping to see Tyrone fans leaving early again this weekend...

Micky Harte and any manager has a right to express their opinions. Instead of the GAA President complaining about criticism of referees he should be adressing what is a huge issue within the GAA, and that is the lack of consistency with refereeing not just year in year out, or from game to game but during a single game as was the case last Sunday.
