Thats the problem Viking we come in spurts and until the last 20 years or so would have 12 decent players on the field.Now we seem to be able to get 25 or so who are at least equal to each other. That in itself and the bad luck of there just been better teams around than us when we have been at our strongest. Also need to be better at blending the new with the seasoned players because we certainly not strong enough to get them all from the same generation. Michael Ryan in nice way this week questioned what goes on in our club game. Easy frees that you would not get playing Limerick, Clare, Cork, Kilkenny, Wexford etc. That softy stuff is not the way to prepare for inter county.

I'm in kind of agreement! Cregan had it all as both a footballer and hurler. I saw him play full-back for Claughaun in a county final when he was, I believe, 41 years of age, and he was head and shoulders above any other player on the field. I have seen a lot of them greats of the past and they were greats of their era. Not sure their athletism would allow them to match the modern greats. Now if they were playing and training in these times maybe they would even be better than the modern players. This is why it is impossible to compare players from different times. Cregan a great player for sure. In extreme competition for the best on that team. The great Eamon Grimes and Big Joe. May be Richie Bennis also. Pat Hartigan the best fullback I have seen in my life time. Career shortened with eye injury. Incredible to believe the next best was back to back with Lenard Enright.

Hartigan is the player I most remember from that team even though one uncles knew Ned Rea of Faughs well, ahem!, through Dublin. He was fantastic full back who i saw a few times playing Dublin in league. Possibly one of the few players of that era who physically would have been a match for current Limerick lads? This 100%. You can't compare generations because being the best of any given year is all you can be. Like, would Nicky Rackard survive in the modern game? Who knows. Would players now survive in the 50s? Who knows.
