What are people's opinions on Cluxton's speech having no Irish in it? Wrong, doesn't matter, disgraceful, etc...? doratheexplorer (Cavan) - Posts: 1467 - 26/09/2013 13:14:18 1489823 Link 0 |
Not in the slightest bit bothered. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13654 - 26/09/2013 13:38:02 1489838 Link 0 |
Couldn't hear it! He's not the speechifying type. They are only formalities anyway. When we won the Leinster hurling the speeched nearly put people to sleep instead of adding to the ocassion. A minute or two is grand. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 26/09/2013 13:38:27 1489839 Link 0 |

I think we were lucky enough to get a few words of English out of him in fairness! Snufalufagus (Dublin) - Posts: 8100 - 26/09/2013 13:44:03 1489846 Link 0 |
Who gives a ****, I used to hate listening to those big long speeches, worse than weddings! As for the lack of gaelige, personally doesn't bother me, disgraceful would be a little harsh though, it's well documented that Cluxton is not at home with that type of stuff and to have a go at him would just be pathetic after all he's done for Dublin. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8756 - 26/09/2013 13:44:13 1489847 Link 0 |
Some people find public speaking very difficult and they can withdraw a bit; that's the way of the world and we should accept it. However while Cluxton takes the game very serious he should also remember it's a game to be enjoyed too especially when you win. Stephen could smile a bit more, chill out and enjoy his career a bit better as could Jim Gavin who should reflect on some of the ungracious and nonsensical stuff he comes out with. Ive witnessed great speeches that the hair stands on the back of your neck , theres the average thank everybody speech , then theres Cluckos ,woeful and uncomfortable as it may have been , having met the man on numerous occasions I can guarantee there would have been NO insult or disrespect intended what so ever , its a speech anybody who knows him was expected , think if he could have given it from the tunnel hed have been more comfortable Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 26/09/2013 13:44:22 1489849 Link 0 |
Hand the Cup to Mayo. Dublin were in breach of rule 23:56:a.1.1 which states "the winning captain must make the acceptance speech As Gaeilge, otherwise the match shall be forfeited" s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5520 - 26/09/2013 13:46:40 1489852 Link 0 |
Being an Irish speaker and someone with great respect for traditions of the GAA I felt a bit disappointed but that said we had five of the first 15 who started who are fluent speakers and I heard at least three of them doing interviews on Raidió na Gaeltachta since the game. Certainly better than Lee Chin's Leinster U-21 speech earlier this year an tseabhac (Kerry) - Posts: 441 - 26/09/2013 13:53:55 1489864 Link 0 |
lookm I wouldnt; be his biggest fan, but who cares about his speech, he is obviously a shy lad and more importantly for Dublin and their fan he does his best talking on the field, where it counts Horsebox77 (Kerry) - Posts: 5491 - 26/09/2013 13:56:45 1489867 Link 0 |
It cost Mayo an All Ireland title, no doubt about it. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8401 - 26/09/2013 14:02:34 1489870 Link 0 |
Speech was fine but it was the first speech I have ever heard where he didn't give the "three cheers"(I know he mentioned Mayo played well and will get their day), the other boys should have reminded him but savage kickouts(I think he killed the Mayo half forwards with the speed of the kickouts, very quick turnaround) boomcha (Offaly) - Posts: 39 - 26/09/2013 14:03:47 1489872 Link 0 |
doesn't matter. It's nice to hear speech in Irish if the captain is a native speaker (Dara O'Cinneide's speech in 2004 came across very well) but I don't see why someone should just throw in the few words as Gaeilge if it's not natural to them. Cluxton was great captain for Dub's. Not great for Mayo but we'll just have to live with it. pdempsey (Mayo) - Posts: 1313 - 26/09/2013 14:16:25 1489882 Link 0 |
thought cluxton was right not to offer the condescending 3 cheers to mayo.he paid tribute to them and knew they were hurting. That was enough.Mayo didn't want to be on the pitch any longer than they had to be. sugerloaf (Dublin) - Posts: 25 - 26/09/2013 14:16:49 1489883 Link 0 |
It was the nature of the man. Anyone questioning his legendary status should remember his punch on McAteer! emmomac (UK) - Posts: 273 - 26/09/2013 14:21:11 1489890 Link 0 |
The perfect captain for the Dublin Footballers. His calm laid back style is the anti-thesis to the nonsense that is often built up around the side. His speech was low key but he thanked and mentioned everything and everyone he needed to. A class act is Stephen. seany16 (Dublin) - Posts: 1663 - 26/09/2013 14:31:27 1489908 Link 0 |
