County Population

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

According to the census bureau Monaghan has a population of 63,000 people. If everyone in Monaghan showed up to Croke Park they still would be 20,000 people short. However, I'm sure there are at least 5,000 Monaghan people living in Dublin and probably another 40,000 diaspora living worldwide. So if Monaghan did get to an All Ireland final they probably could get at least 35,000/40,000 fans to show up. Other counties are probably smaller than Monaghan like Letrim, but still get a great following.

Interesting debate we could start here especially when it come to possible player resources a county can pull and number of fans etc.

Galway fans are putting forward the point of their poor football following due to the county being split with Hurling. Galway in totla has a population of 250,541

Mayo: 130,638

If we half galway's pop we are left with 125,271. Now you can minus or plus however you want but the playing population and support for both should be the same roughly. (factor in Galway city which would be largly non-gaa but some hurling support would prop that up). Just a quick though thats all.

On a Note I hope Galway knock lumps outa Cork on Sat and join us in the quarters - Connacht how are ya then lads!

Yew_tree, there is soccer and rugby in Gaillimh freisin! The amount playing the games is the figure that should be compared. Forget population. The six counties in the north all have relatively high populations but when you subtract the people who don't like the GAA in those counties you are left with a lot less and soccer would be a lot popular up north than it would be in the south.

There is soccer and rugby in mayo also.... You are correct though, it is down to numbers involved. Like the 10-12 teams many dublin clubs field between u-13/u-14 level, while in the average county, clubs struggle to get 25 lads total. Is taht the numbers you are talking about?

It would be great if you had some sort of a link to back that up Master but, unfortunately I do not think there are any links to back it up. Its romantism at best.

Ha ha ha! Thats hilarious. What club(s) is that. I just read that again. Just shows how much you know about Dublin football. Thats funny.

Like the link you provided to suggest mayo were favourites for sam is it?

The fact is, if you were involved with club football in dublin you would know that clubs have 5-6 teams at u13 and the same at u14. Do you not follow the clubs in your own county?

Culann - Galway still have a bigger playing football population. More football clubs than Mayo.

Ye said the same in 2011 and Mayo were bascially laughed at before the game began, a bit similar to Galway being told not to show up. UP THE WEST!

What clubs? Name them. What are you on about? Seriously lad, you cannot just make things up and post them as fact.

Regarding the favoutites positions I quoted clearly that you were 3/1 favourites with Boyle Sports and Paddy Power and 10/3 with ladbrooks to land SAM - making you second favourites with the bookies. I also stated that the Dubs were favourites with the bookies but explained why this was unrealistic. Do you not reember me saying that? Is that the reason you have been talking crap?

I'm not doubting you, yew_tree, but would love to see a link for that. I'd have imagined that there would be more villages and towns in Maigh Eo than in Gaillimh.

Well, there are a few super huge clubs in Dublin that will field around 8 teams between U13 & U14 in football. That will go to about three at minor level, and then those big clubs will normally have a senior, inter and maybe 3 junior teams.

However, those sort of clubs are fairly rare. Many Dublin clubs are struggling to field one team at adult level like in other parts of the country.

Name them. I was brought up in one of the biggest clubs in Dublin, Kilmacud Crokes and we certainly didn't have 8 teams between U13 and U14. It is absolutely ridiculous that people are coming on here stating mistruths as reality without the foggiest idea. Name the clubs.

Well theMaster seems to have access to information on all of the Dublin Clubs to be constantly throwing these figures around. Maybe he has done an audit incognito over the last few years? The links to websites that contain this information never seem to make their way onto Hoganstand.com either. Though it is easy to make presumptions when a county has a population of 1.3 million (All playing GAA games of course) to throw out figures like that.

Just because they didnt have it in your day culann doesnt mean it isnt the case now. You should really keep track of how your own club is doing, some gaa man.

You are correct ringo, this is exactly what I was referring to.

I'm afraid master you have not the slightest clue what your talking about. 10-12 teams. Are you mad!! I've said it before and i'll say it again you are some boy.

It would appear that Kilmacud Crokes would just have the 6 teams...apologies. I used the word 'around' there too liberally...

Well that is one possibility.. Another is I actually know people involved with these teams and they just told me... But stick with your one, it makes it sound less believable...

The sad thing is, all you lads are doing is displaying how out of touch you are with clubs in your own county...
