Football: Best freetaker in the game

Sorry just notice the thread isn't for the best ever but I'd still reckon Cluxton's conversion rate is not as good as the three Jinxie named, although to be fair Cluxton mostly takes long distance ones so that would skew his stats

I have to agree with Jinxie he is pretty much spot on, although I might have Goulding as #1.

its funny how history remember some lads as better free takers than they were
many a man would tell you Trevor Giles and Dara O'Cinneide for instance were great free takers who never missed.....when in fact they were both very flakey and missed many very kickable frees.
as was Mossy Quinn. People lamenting the fact we have a goalie taking frees cos we never replaced Mossies free taking ability are talking out their hoop :)

McFadden doesnt miss many either. We are very lucky in having to good free takers, one for each side.

I would see Bryan Sheehan anywhere inside the opposition half is scorable for him. In the past Maurice Fitz and our own Oisin McConville were lethal from the deck.

Off The Ground: Bryan Sheehan, Michael Murphy, Daniel Goulding

From The Hands: Colm Cooper, Colm McFadden, Cillian O' Connor

Maurice Fitzgerald was the King when it came to kicking off the ground, left and right, it didn't matter, nor did distance bother him. Mikey Sheehy wasn't too shabby either! Peter Canavan and Padraic Joyce were excellent from the hands.

Well if we're talking ever you've got to bring Barney Rock and Brian Stafford into it

Murphy has developed a Sheehan-esque ability to nail long range frees from the ground. Some of the distances he's scored from recently in club and county colours has to be seen to be believed.

Goulding from Cork is also very accurate from a placed ball.

From the hands there are a few fine exponents. McFadden, Gooch, Cillian O'Connor, James Kielt, McCormack from Longford,...

Emlyn Mulligan would have very good conversion rate, I do rate O'Connor very highly as well, hit two superb sideline kicks from either side in league game v Cork. Sheehan one of the best at distance free's.
I think most people would expect any decent freetaker to hit all frees from in around the semi circle area, when it comes to the more difficlt frees there are two types (a) the distance kick (b) the angled free. On many teams you will find the probably have different free takers for each. Dublin only use Cluxton for teh distance frees for example.
Does anyone actually produce stats regarding free taking percentages?

When Sheehan is good he is the best, but when hes bad he can be very bad in fairness. I have seen him score monster of frees, I would say he has possibly scored the furthest ever point in gaelic at some stage (I wonder), but he has like anyone bad days at the office. I would have said up until this year Cluxton would be more consistent. Our own Cillian O Connor is doing us proud, and hopefully considering his young age will be remeberd like Maurice Fitzgerald in years to come.

Mickey Newman has probably been the best in this years championship so far. Overall Sheehan.

Honestly id love to see the stats for free's taken on the 40 or outside. I would be quite confident that Cluxton is top dog or at least up there

Michael Murphy rarely misses from any distance up to 55m. Nailed a few monsters in the AI final and against Tyrone in May.

Young Shane Carthy on the dublin panel is a phenomenal free taker! He nails them from 60 70 yards for our club when he plays and did it for the minors last year too! Give him a few years to break into the team and everyone will be talking about him as one of the best!
