Permission to cheat

Richiescats,

Your missing the point. Whether Hickey took it on the chin or not or whether it was seen by officials or not isnt my point. Im saying that KK went after him that day not just by putting Eddie on him or by pumping ball into him but every chance they got they nailed him with a puck or a dig and got away with it, all cardable offences but they were cute and got away with it.

The point is its so easy to referee yet for reasons beyond sense it's allowed. Barefaced cheating permitted by the supposed referee. It's time it was stopped, it can be done without revisiting the rule book, and yes the game would be better off without permitting it. Likewise with the running onto the pitch crying at the ref just to get in his ear. Now who does that oh yeah it's dark arts problem is its not dark it's bloody obvious and it's wrong. I loved the Donegal team that won the all Ireland in 1992 and you have great players and people. My point is the refs are too soft.

Jonno,

Maybe a possible reason is that the referees are trying to let the players play as the saying goes. I understand your concerns and agree they need to be stamped out but refs are coming under alot of pressure to let things flow.

All it takes is for the first offence move the ball up makes the free easier. Let the games flow has nothing to do with allowing someone stand in front of a free, if anything it slows the game down. The problem as I see it is that a lot of our refs like to think they are in charge, but when it comes to separating the rules of the game from the pressure of the situation they repeatedly fail to deal with it. Logic goes out the window. To ref the game with consistency requires a strong line from the start and maintaining it. If a team decides its going to make cheating part of the policy then it's up to the refs to cut out the obvious stuff and the dark arts will be more legitimate.

If this was happening at Juvenile level I could understand given maybe the standard of officials, but not at the highest level of the game. At an U16 Hurling match recently a free-taker was "tackled" I kid you not!! But this is ridiculous, the rules are clear - very clear and if a player doesn't move he gets booked and you move it ten metres closer. Last week at the Dublin v Wexford game the referee to put the ball in for a throw-in he had to force his way through a crowd of players - pathetic. Nothing whatsoever to do with letting the game flow (how many times have we heard that crap?). Just ref the damn match.

Because referees in gaelic football and hurling are more interested in having controversy, "letting a game flow", giving the advantage to the cheater, than actually enforcing the rules as they are supposed to. No player is allowed within 13 metres of a free, either from the same team or opposing free, in any direction from the ball. It's not a difficult one to police.
