Competition: choose the greatest football team ever

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

KevHill - Why would you put the players honours beside their names for the team of the century. The whole point of picking a team like that is to ignore personal honours. Dermot Early senior and junior for example wouldn't be out of place on our hoganstand team and they never won All Ireland's. my point is someone with no medals could be a better footballer than one with a load of them.

I totally understand Kevhill good thinking to put the teams up.

So Galway won 3 in a row and a total of 9 All-Irelands plus 44 Connacht titles without having a player worthy of this team. Don't make me laugh. Brian Dooher wouldn't carry water to Michael Donnelan, Sean Purcell, Frank Stockwell, Ja Fallon or Padraig Joyce. I mentioned before about Padraig Joyce scoring 10 points off Darren Fay in 2001 final and the Meath lads correctly pointed out that Fay wasn't on Joyce in the second half. What they failed to mention is that Fay went onto Derek Savage who proceeded to set up 5 or 6 of Joyce's 10 points. Gary Fahy for one was a more solid full back and never played a poor game in 10 years for Galway. There are many flaws with this team but Fay and Dooher are the glaring ones.

You have probably worked out that the centre half forward spot goes to Trevor Giles. Hard luck to Ciaran McDonald, one of the most skilful players to grace a football field.

Our Hogan Stand team is:

1. Stephen Cluxton (Dublin)

2. Marc O'Sé (Kerry)
3. Darren Fay (Meath)
4. Tony Scullion (Derry)

5. Tomas O Sé (Kerry)
6. Seamus Moynihan (Kerry)
7. Martin O'Connell (Meath)

8. Daragh O'Sé (Kerry)
9. Jack O'Shea (Kerry)

10. Brian Dooher (Tyrone)
11. Trevor Giles (Meath)
12. Pat Spillane (Kerry)

13. Colm Cooper (Kerry)
14. Peter Canavan (Tyrone)
15. Maurice Fitzgerald (Kerry)

Well done to all.

Thanks to all of our posters for participating.

Not bad for the weak link of a team to make the forums greatest team

Impossible task. The earliest generations are lost to the mists of time. Since the 30s, the game has evolved constantly. What made a good player in the 50s clearly wasn't of much use in the 90s, and vice versa.
That said, since the millennium, I think only S Moynighan, P Canavan and C Cooper would walk into a best ever team. Interesting to see some pundits all but writing the latter off. Don't be so quick. Genius may not grace us to the same extent for some time!

Clondalkin you have ignored almost a hundred years of football history with that team. No Sean Purcell ??

Lads, that's not Clondalkindub's team - that's the team voted for a few months ago by HS posters. I have stated on another thread that it's ultra modern and a reflection of the media influence on GAA fans.

To omit the likes of Mikey Sheehy, Matt Connor, Sean Purcell, Mick O'Connell, Enda Colleran, Martin Furlong etc. is ridiculous, and is all the evidence one needs to know to ignore teams like this.

Green grass it was done two years ago and we all agreed we were leaving some of the greats out because we never seen them play , we all agreed cause we're nearly all in the 20 to 50 age bracket that we were mainly picking players from the last 30 years. How cold we vote for a player we never seen play? Anyway my point was about the greatest keeper of a time.

Kevin Hill from Antrim posted a nice team.

However I would replace Pat Spillane and Mikey Sheehy of Kerry with Paddy Doherty and Mickey Linden of Down

clondalkindub agree it should be in the last 30 years. First player id put in any team of ALL time would be Toehill. Beast

Its grossly unfair to call this the Greatest Team Ever.
It basically just covers the last 3 years.

Marc O Se in there is a joke TBH . Lacey has always been a much better defender and attacker . Lacey was a POTY and has 4 all stars : two before Jim came on board . O Se is picked because of his name .

All those players are all-time greats, no doubt about that. . .BUT, how can you say it would beat any other poster's team - for example, I could probably pick out any man in your 15 (apart from 1 or 2 shoe-ins) and replace him with someone just as good or better.

OR . . i could pick a team of current players who train in a more advanced way that ever, are fitter, faster, stronger and more tactically prepared than all of your 15, bar Murphy of course.

Not sure which is more unbelievable - that there is not a single player from Connacht on that team or that Brian Dooher is. He was big hearted and capable of the occasional score but the idea he should be on the best team of all time is laughable.
