Competition: choose the greatest football team ever

clondalkin, I'm not trying to be offensive to you or anything so please don't take this the wrong way. But if you are genuinely suggesting that Bernard Brogan is a better footballer than Maurice Fitzgerald was then you are either totally blinkered or your grasp of Gaelic football is insufficient.

Ciaran McDonald our people on here for real? Declan O Sullivan ,Ja Fallon,Alan Brogan, Colm O Rourke, Larry Thompkins ,Cillian O Conor,Andy Moran,Alan Dillon off the top of my head are way better centre forwards than McDonald. Another player who had moments of brilliance and that's all people seem to remember but the man had a million off days were the Mayo people were slating him and he was dropped off the panel when in his prime so he couldn't of been that good.

Lockjaw as a corner forward when the game is on the line then yes I think Bernard is the man you'd want to win you the game. As an all round footballer obviously Maurice is better but as a corner forward it's Bernard for me all the time.

Given royaldunne hasn't posted yet I'll vote on his behalf and in keeping with the greatest(Meath) team of all time
Graham Geraghty has to be on the team but then how could you omit Bernard Flynn
Graham it is then No 15

Clondalkin dub... I agree 100% with you about the centre forward position. Mc Donald wasn't as good as them lads you mentioned and throw in the likes of Brian Mc Guigan,Giles as well. Them boys were all better no.11's than Mc Donald.

Hasn't done it over a career wtf???? What are you on about Damo? Bernard Brogan is the best 15 to ever play the game just ask Marc O Se , the McMahon brothers, Canty, Sheilds, McGhee,Clafferty, Ollie Lyons etc

How many AI has BB got ? how many all stars ? Dublin senior championships ? He was marked out of his club senior Dublin championship in Parnell park by murray of Bridgits for crying out loud , Ive tremendous respect for BB and think in time he could become a great , but he's not one now , take off your blue goggles , obvious you and I have a different criteria for marking greatness , one swallow doesn't make a summer . I wouldn't have Bernard in Dublins all time 15 , but thats just me ,
Love to know how you judged he was better than Canavan on what basis ?

As much as it pains me to say it Ciaran McDonald is, was and always will be a genius. His range of passing, his point scoring and even when it would have been easier to give up like other men around him, his drive to carry on even if the cause was lost was immense.

I wish he was born in Galway - he stands alone in the no 11 role in my eyes. Whats shocking is that Padraig Joyce isn't in!!!!!

Like his one-on-one chance in last year's AI semi-final against Mayo you mean?

Where did I say he's better than Canavan Damo? I have Canavan at 14 and I've stated that Gooch and Canavan are the greatest forwards I've ever seen. Damo that's a bit unfair bringing up Murray and club football, how do we know other players on here weren't marked out of it in club games?? And if they were does that mean there not the greatest? Sean George marked the Gooch out of it this year for ballymun against Dr Crokes does that mean Gooch shouldnt be in the team? I remember Bernard scoring 10 points off Paul Griffin in the championship final a few years back and Crokes went on to win the all Ireland. I think my voting in this greatest ever team has been really fair and unbiased , I only voted for Cluxton ,Curran ,Mullins and Bernard from Dublin so the blue goggles comment is a bit unfair.

Lockjaw that can happen and it was a great save , what would worry me more was if he wasn't getting the chances to score goals.

1412300 He hasn't been destroying teams since 07, he played wing forward for most of 07, pulled his hamstring in 08 and had a massive leinster campaign in 09 but his championship was cut short when we were hammered by Kerry. In 2010 he was incredible, in 2011 he dropped a level but was still fantastic and last year he was average. You need to open your eyes if you genuinely believe he is the best 15 ever.

That's probably a strict enough critical assessment of his career so far but at the same time probably doesn't do him full justice. He has been unlucky with a few injuries. I think we can all agree that he is a fantastic footballer in his own right but I have to side with the masses on this one. BB still has time to immortalise himself to the rest of the country but it can not be understated about the role he has had to play in the resugent Dublin team of the past five or so years.

So many great players could be put into 15 here. Matt Connors was immense as was John Egan. We could be here for a month of Sundays discussing who could be on this team and so many of them could be justified. Delighted to see Giles in there and also MacDoanld (even if by a twist! haha). We could probably name a few teams of equal balance and quality. Too many to name fully but examples would be Lyons, P O'Se, Joyce (dare I add one of my favourite players around Gormley...I wonder if I'll get any amens on that one! haha check out this video: link).

However, The nr. 15 for me has to go to my favourite footballer of all time, 'Magic' Maurice Fitzgerald. I Was privileged enough to watch this man play Club and County many times. His natural ability was tremendous. The scores he took in the '97 final (which is not where his career began!) and the sideline ball against Dublin were sublime. Earlier in this forum someone mentioned about a ball falling to a man in the last minute and wanting BB in there. A good shout but MF showed his steely bottle with that kick.

However, the goal he scored against Armagh in '00. Solo on the right and finished with the left. Beautiful.

Bernard Brogan on the best 15 ever, you're having a laugh man.

I doubt he'd even make the best ever Dublin 15.

He isn't even the best player in his family.

LOL, great post, when you're own county men
disagree with you clondalkin, you have to
accept the possibility that you are wrong!

Bernard Brogan is a great talent but as already stated he still has a lot to prove, I've seen him get marked out of it on a few occasions even in games where Dublin win.

And for the record Maurice Fitz was well known and respected as a class act for years before '97, he was already playing intercounty for 10 years at that stage!

I've seen great players marked out of it when there team has won it happens Seanie. It's probably unfair for Bernard cause he's still playing and were judging him game by game, whereas Gooch has won 4 all Ireland his legend is already cemented even when he has a bad game no one really says anything. Retired players legend grows year after year and people forget how average they were in some games and only remember the good things they did.

I'll go for Mikey Sheehy here - too good a corner forward not to be included.
