Competition: choose the greatest football team ever

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Never seen Mikey Sheehy play so he he is immediately discounted. So many great nominees for this position but I have narrowed it down to:

Mickey Linden - ultimate nippy turn and score corner forward
Colin Corkery - excellent target man with silky skills
Steven McDonnell - Strength and single mindedness & made goals from nothing
Colm Cooper - Impossible agility that made anything possible

You know there is only one winner here and that's the Gooch. He is a sublime footballer and when he can stand head and shoulders above players of the calibre mentioned says it all. His recent move to the 40 is another revelation of his repertoire of skills

Colm Cooper

lost me way with this thread what with some lads jumping the gun and picking positions before Admin gives the go ahead. Anyway reckon my 11-aside would give many other 15 a sides a run for their money.

Matt Connor, Mikey Sheehy and Maurice Fitzgerald are arguably the three most stylish and sublime footballers to grace the field and was fortunate to see them all in the flesh but Gooch has it all:

No 13 Colm Cooper

I'm too young to remember Sheehy or Connor so for me it's between Linden and Cooper and Linden, at his best, would skin Cooper in a footrace so it has to be Mickey Linden! Ultimate hero worship in my younger years before he failed me my driving test!

I'm shocked that nobody has voted for him in the no.13 spot yet with a little under half an hour left.

Played for Down seniors for over 20 years between 1982 and 2003 winning 1 National League, 3 Ulster Championship and 2 All-Ireland medals , not to mention 1 all-star and 1 player of the year awards.

I'm choicing Peter Canavan at 14. There has been many serious players at 14 over the years, Bomber, Donaghy from Kerry, Joyce from Galway, Jimmy Keavney, but my votes goes to Peter Canavan.

14. Peter Canavan the greatest forward who ever played the game.

All Stars - 6, Senior All Irelands - 2, Under 21 All Irelands - 2, Vocational Schools All Irelands - 2, Senior Ulsters Titles - 5, NFL Titles - 2, Ulster U21's - 2, Ulster Minor - 1, Ulster Club - 2, Senior Club Tyrone - 6. Inagurial Footballer of the year 1995.

The only thing that avoided him in his career was an All Ireland Club (thanks to another fantastic 14 Corks Colin Corkery)

Been going to games since 1978 when I was seven. The best forward I have ever seen in that time is my choice for full forward. The great Matt Connor of Offaly
