Trevor Giles - Meath. Best 40 yard man of the past 30 years anyway

Has to be Trevor Giles, the best man I have seen to lead an attack. Great to bring others into the game and comfortable at winning his own ball. Skryne man could score as well, deadly accurate from frees and could split the best of defences with precision passing.

Surprised that not many Tyrone people are shouting Sean Kavanaghs name for the half forward line. Others not mentioned include Kevin Kilmurray of Offaly and Declan Barron of Cork, a mighty fielder,

I stand corrected sedico i think it was martin lynch that our keith had a "disagreement" with ! Not that embarrassing just one little mistake ! If my memory serves me correct apart from lynch i think john finn willie mc creery (now a horse trainer) and eddie mc cormack were the other kildare players on that clane team !

Ciaran McDonald

I've been fearing the centre half-forward day since this thread started because I knew there would be so much gra for Ciaran McDonald.

He was everything a playmaker shouldn't be lads. Great talent for passing and taking scores, but his pass selection and positional sense on the pitch were terrible. He would try a speculative pass off the side of his boot to look good instead of giving the smartest pass to set up an attacking play - like a playmaker should. He would always drop deep to get cheap ball and evade his marker which meant moves would always start miles from the danger zone. Tom Kelly from Laois set up twice as many scores from half back when he marked him in a league match I was at because Mc Donald was walking around his own half back line to get space instead of doing some hard running (ie Declan O'Sullivan).

Sorry for the rant! But go back and watch some of his big games and not a youtube highlights reel.

The correct answer is Greg Blaney.

PS. Trevor Giles was just a free taker!

Seanie I agree with what your saying, I remember McDonald being terrible in so many games but since he was dropped from the Mayo panel he has become this legendary player which he never was. He was a good skilfull player that had moments of brilliance but is nowhere near the greatest centre forward to play the game. Give me Dillon,O Conor or Moran over McDonald any day of the week.

Seanie nonSense,

Free taking was the worst aspect to Trevor Giles game. IMO he's the greatest player to ever wear a Meath jersey. Meath football's decline started the minute he hung his boots.

Greg blaney next best but Giles by a country mile.

Tompkins for me.

Ciaran Mac was a great footballer but there are so many players ahead of him in the last 20 years.

Blaney, Fallon, Declan O'Sullivan and Giles to name a few.

I somewhat agree with people saying he is overrated in aspects of his game, but that statement is far from accurate, he was considered a legendary player long before he was dropped,

Only winding about Giles!

Very good player but for a few years but he had the luxury of having great players around him. The success that Meath team had in my opinion there were at least 3 or 4 more influential players on that team that he depended on to operate. When they retired Giles was very ordinary looking and he was only around 27/28. I know he was unlucky with injuries but def not best ever category.

Mayofc he wasn't ,how many times did he kicked the ball over the end line trying the dream pass. Cillian O Conor even now is a way better more talented player than McDonald ever was.

Ah 11 the leader of the attack, traditionally the play maker, the guy who keeps a level head and opens the opposition defence with pin point accuracy. He really needs to be more than just a footballer he needs to know how his team think what they are going to do next and how to get the most out of them.

Anyway my nominees are:

Trevor Giles
Greg Blaney
Declan O'Sullivan

Yeah no Brian McGuigan or Ciaran Mac. The reason? Well I dont think BMG was in the same bracket as those above. Great passer at his peak but he was not always a cool head and went down hill later in his career alought not really all his fault. Ciaran Mac was a ridiculous footballer (in every way!) He had great skills and was fantastic to watch but the problem was no one new what he gonna do next (including himself I think!) not what a great 11 needs to be. Larry Thompkins is another notable 11 but not at this never and never seen Sean Purcell so cant't comment.

Really hard pick this one. I immediately discounted DOS because of the Derrytresk game (joke!), nah because although he is an excellent footballer in fact probably the best of the three skillwise, he didnt operate in that role as well as the other two. So it was a straight fight between the other two, really close call both fantastic playmakers at pin point accurate passers and the epitome of coolness under pressure. I am just gonna plump for Greg Blaney though by the narrowest of margins, I think he had that tiny bit more.

Greg Blaney
