Good player though he was, Ciaran McDonald wasn't even Mayo's greatest ever CHF (see Padraig Carney).

The names I'd be considering would be the legends of the game like Dick Fitzgerald (as in Fitzgerald Stadium), Larry Stanley (Kildare), Jimmy Murray (Roscommon), Mick Higgins (Cavan) Mattie McDonagh (Galway), James McCartan Snr, Larry Tompkins, Greg Blaney and, more recently, Trevor Giles, Ja Fallon and Brian McGuigan.

However, great as all those were, my choice has to be 'The Master' Sean Purcell, regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time.

I think we all just wish he was a few years younger here in Mayo, Ciaran McDonald

1408654 Realdub dont even enter into that debate with the lad from kildare ! Keith barr put manners on tom harris when he play champo for the dubs v kildare and also in the leinster club final in 1997 erins isle v clane ! Harris hasnt been seen since probably still hiding under his bed ! Lol !

You really don't know your football do you. Tom Harris never played for Clane. In fact he played for a club that couldn't be further from Clane - namely Rheban. Embarrassing stuff altogether.

Sedico,

I think he must be getting mixed up with Martin Lynch? Was he Clane?

Yea he was Clane ok. Can't remember him ever playing centre forward for Kildare thought. Mostly midfield or corner/full forward.

1408675 Hey seanienosense very few players ever got the better of keith barr your obviously referring to the big games of the nineties im doing so your being very selective i dont remember keith being cleaned out in any of those games ! Just because the dubs lost those games doesnt mean KB was responsible none of his markers ran up big scores ! Keith barr being afraid of martin "beag" mc hugh ? Your having a laugh ! As and for the feathered hair as you put it ' the aul mullet was the hairstyle of choice of a few of that donegal team ! (and still is by one of your 1992 subs)

Is that you Keith :)

The one and only Sean Purcell for me at centre half forward. Giles and mc Guigan would be close also but has to be Purcell for me.

Ciaran McDonald gifted player but he never did it when his county really needed him apart from against an average Dublin in 06.

More like he didn't have much help. I should know, he was part of an average Mayo team in 04 and 06 who punched above their weight to get to the final.

In terms of honours it's hard to go past Ogie Moran yet even with 5 AI's in the bag he couldn't displace Sean Purcell on Team of the Century and for that reason I would discount Ogie: too young to see Frank Purcell and for this reason Purcell misses out on my vote: the finest exponent of CHF I've seen in the flesh is Greg Blaney: strong, fearless, intelligent, un-selfish, skillful and his distribution was second to none. Played in an era when no back door and in the most competitive era of Ulster era otherwise would have more medals to his name:other honourable mentions are Trevor Giles, Brian McGuigan and Declan O'Sullivan but for my money

Greg Blaney Down
