Dan McCartan was still very much around in the late 60's. Slowed up a little and they put him back full back. Had a great year in 68

Yeah, should have mentioned Keith Barr, great drive, dash and a fine ball player

I'll go with Moynihan again. I chose him at #3 but he was such a bloody good footballer he was wasted in there. No better man at number 6.

Keith Barr or Richie Connor

The best I have seen would be Kevin Moran, Seamus Moynihan and Glenn Ryan, and out of that trio I would go for Glenn. However, from what I have heard I would have to pick the Gallant John Joe. The Cavan stalwart who graced the playing fields of Kildare with his presence while stationed in the Curragh. They still talk about him in these parts as the greatest.

Out on his own as the best number 6, John Joe O Reilly.

Hope admin does not mind me coming on so often. Just am a bit older than most here and saw many of the older stars.

Did Seamus Moynihan play much at centre half back for Kerry?

Richie was another one I left out. Tough as teak and was a one man backline at times against the Dubs in Leinster finals during the late 70's.

Showed his versatility and toughness when moving to centre half forward for that famous win over Kerry. If memory serves me right he had a cartilage removed only weeks before that game. How the heck did he get through the 70 minutes?

Moynihan played all his football for Kerry in the half back line except for his cameo at full back between 2000 & 2004 As much as an outstanding full back he was,The years of 05 & 06 he was incredible in the no.6 jersey.

My vote goes to Seamus Moynihan (Honorable mention to Kieran McGeeney)

That's correct, but definitely played his best football in the early 60's. Retired from county football for a spell and Down didn't reach the same heights when he returned. Just a shame be retired again before the '69 championship, could've won himself another Ulster and AI medal. Though he stated in his book that it's something he never regretted doing.

Cavan's legendary John Joe O'Reilly is my choice here. Other greats that I'd consider would be Jack Higgins (Kildare), Gerry O'Malley (Roscommon), Bill Casey (Kerry), Henry Downey (Derry) and Kieran McGeeney (Armagh).

Some great men contending for this position as other posters have already alluded to but I have to choose the one man who had very few peers in the modern game:

Seamus Moynihan at 6.

Was always a great fan of Seamus Moynihan of Kerry but the great and Gallant John Joe O'Reilly from Cavan has few peers. So John Joe for centre back then!!

I have always been a fan of McGeeney even if he boke my heart in 2002. he had all the qualities for leadership and captain, but as he good as he was he wasn;t a patch on the Pony. Seamus Moynihan was head and shoulders above any player I have ever seen play for any team, pound for pound one of the best players to ever grace a gaa field.

One ony number 6: Seamus Moynihan gets my vote

Sorry, I was mixing my knowledge up with James McCartan Snr retiring before the 68 championship. Dan McCartan of course was around for the AI victory in 68.

It has to be John Joe O Reily at Number 6.

Same as Lockjaw above. I went for Moynihan at full back but seeing as he didn't get that spot I'll go for him at centre back.

So that's Séamus Moynihan for me.

Honourable mentions for Keith Barr and Kieran McGeeney too.

Easiest position to chose so far - Moynihan

Second to him (and I'm going back as far as the 70s!)is Tom Kelly from Laois. Had everything a centre half back should have and streets ahead of some of the other contenders mentioned.
