Naming Teams

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I tend to be somewhere in the middle on this one. One the one side I understand why the media want the starting 15 named days beforehand so as to facilitate more accurate previews of games. Also on the otherhand managers do not want to reveal their hand until the last mionute. However most inter county managers have egos the size of the room and are happy to court the media when it suits them and without the media covering these games we would have a poor championship. I agree with some previous posters in allocating squad numbers to the panel which should remain in place for the duration of the championship. Also spare a thought for our hurling supporter not as easy to identify the hurlers with the helmets.

Basically, There should be a squad of players named for the championship and them squads list published in the middle or the back of the programme.. Then the tea should be named an hour or so before throw in.. It adds to the excitement to know find out the team just before throw in.. If they can do it with the soccer I don't see why they cant do it here. I don't like the idea of squad numbers.. 1-15 should start the game, For example if Stephen Cluxton starts he wears number 1, And if Shane Supple started the following game he wears number 1 and so on.

Waynol

You are suggesting that county teams do as club teams do it
And have done for years
Interesting

The announcer calls out the team about 20 minutes before the start of the game. He should do it again 15 minutes after the game has started for those of us who like a drop. Could get one more in if we didnt by the program.

Squad numbers could work in Football as players of all positions roam all over the field. Hurling is more structured so I think theres no need.

hill16no1man, completely agree. The GAA want to help the media out, the same media, who if they had their way they would pretend the GAA doesnt exist. In Tuesdays independent, the back page was all about Rugby, and only a few lines given to the Tyrone v Donegal game, while worse still, on last nights RTE news, Cricket was higher on the agenda than GAA.

That is not true at all. The media does not think like that at all.(and I should know - I have been doing a journalism course specialising in sports journalism for the past year)
Tyrone/Donegal. why should that have been covered in major detail in Tuesdays independent?
The Lions is huge at the moment as well as finals of various rugby competitions taking place at the moment so Rugby should be getting plenty of coverage as the season is at its biggest and most important time.
Cricket may have been ahead but maybe

Tyrone v Donegal is a massive game, and therefore deserves huge coverage. Also your comment that Rugby is getting huge coverage because of it reaching the latter stages of the season is ridiculous. A group stage Heineken cup game is prioritised over an AI QTR final or semi final every year in the Irish media, Though considering every time you see the word rugby, you have to make a comment, its hardly suprising to see you pretend this isnt the case.

The donegal v tyrone is one of the most eagerly awaited Gaa match in the biggest gaa competition of the year by supporters.
I hope you do get a job in journalism but just writing about rugby, Id feel sorry for other sports if you had a free reign on what got printed.

Lads there's enough going in the world without the media needing to go looking for news. They don't care if teams are named or not.

It's in the GAA's interests for teams to be named mid-week as it promotes discussion on the game. Not sure if anyone listens to the sports news in the morning but it's common practise for sports news readers to announce starting line-ups.

This is getting people interested in that weekend's games. No team named = no GAA news in the morning = spotlight on other sports.

A lot of you don't realise that there's a lot of social GAA supporters. For many people who will attend games this summer, the GAA season is only starting now. Has anyone any other suggestions as to how the GAA might make championship matches more appealing to this kind of person who's only real interest in the game is the social element?

Jeez what a petty pathetic post. No need for all the personal go's at me. If you want to get personal like that, it can be easily arranged to meet up and discuss this properly
Ive been acknowledged and praised for my conributions and been told both online on other forums and by current irish times journalist Malachy Clerkin amongst others that I am a very good sports journalist on a variety of sports.
It may be an eagerly awaited GAA game but you don't see match previews in large extents for a game to be played on a sunday early in the week. That would be something that would in a newspaper on a Friday, Saturday and/or sunday.

This isnt practical. I know from a mayo perspective, both dillon and cunniffe were not certain to play during the week. They were both just back from injury. What is the manager supposed to do?

________________

Was well known during the week that both Dillon,Cunniffe were to start instead of Keane,Coen. Horan said back in May 14th that Dillon,Andy Moran wouldn't play any part v Galway.

Night before or Morning of the game should be good enough.
If these teams are as professional as they make out they should have no problem making adjustments or changing gameplan to suit the
opposition team.
Alot of crying on here for nothing.
