I agree arock, pundits have a responsibility to venture no further than match-related points with their criticism/praise. Spillane has his moments but in fairness to him, I think he does try to do this. He speaks in terms of football. The same cant always be said for brolly. In fact recently, it can rarely be said of him. For me personally, spillane has spent far more time criticising my own county than brolly ever has, he was doing it again at the weekend. But his criticism is football based, so I can accept it. That is the way it should be.

1387946 Hill maybe likable rather than tolerable :) I do see your point re been focused, but I think the familiarity with pitch and surroundings does help.
haha now we are getting somewhere haha ok for young players who have come out of underage level only maybe familiarity with surroundings may help but personally I always love playing away from home as you get the chance to play in front of people who may never have seen you play before and love the chance to impress them.

1387969 hill16no1man you are offering the exception instead of the rule. Did it not occur to you that if that same stadium was full of opposition fans then the dubs might have lost by more? Every team wants to play at home. They are more used to the surroundings, their fans will be in bigger numbers etc. Now some times teams dont make use of the advantage, but it is an advantage, no question about it. If we could play all our games in mchale park Im pretty sure we would have another sam or two under our belts. For a start, in the 96 drawn game that last gasp ball that bounced over the bar for meath wouldnt have happened, simply because it wouldnt have bounced so high off the spongy turf!
if tyrone go to ballybofey this sunday and win will it still be an exception or does it have to be proven every week? no it doesnt occur to me because that match was over after 10 minutes as dublin mentally were beaten at that stage, regardless of how many thousand were there its the team that play the match and supporters cannot change the mentality of the team. yes for all the things you named teams do enjoy being at home but it does not change how a match is won or lost on the pitch. its no advantage it can only be an advantage mentally if a team thinks they cannot go to a venue and win then it becomes an advantage to the home team purely on the basis the away team mentally is already beaten before they take to the field not because of anything that happened in a certain area of the field or because there was x amount of supporters cheering at a certain stage of the game. No ye wouldnt have another sam or two and if ye did then it would mean that mayo has a mental problem in preparing their teams. so now you are saying the pitch conditions would have won you an all ireland but you forget croke park is not meaths home ground is it?

Last, I think Ciaran Whelean does know his football and is a great pundit, however am I the only one to think it is a disgrace to have him on commenting on football games on the national tv. He is no ambassador for the game!
why is whealo a disgrace and not an ambassador for the game?

Nothin mentioned of the Christy Ring.......... how is this acceptable? Barely 5 mins for two Leinster hurling championship matches one including London which was very interesting in regards to the times we are living in at the moment. RTE should be ashamed of themselves as they did not even have punidts there. The pundits talked abolute nonsense. Brolly is the only one there with an actual opinion and should not be condemned for voicing it. O'Rourke------I cant stand the man and he is ever so careful to step on no ones toes. At least Brolly creates argument. He has an obvious agenda but he needs better people alongside him to actually challenge his opinion and not just ignore him or give him a snite remark

Ha ha good one
The pundits have a responsibility??? To whom? Under the auspices of what?
The Sunday game is an entertainment slot on prime time TV, the programme is set up to illicit responses from the public and they stir the pot until Po faced people like theMaster display their indignation and their work is done and they have succeeded.
You can just imagine Brolly and Spillane laughing after each show that they have done together, pile football was genius it got Themasters and his ilk hopping- result
Keep em coming the wide mouth bass are abitin'

I think Joe Brolly takes criticism of amateur players too far.

Hill16,
I dont think he is an ambassador for the game as when he was a player, He lacked respect for players and the rules in that manner and consistantly let himself down and his team and county down particularly went he was sent of and down to 14 men.
Don't be under the illusion that I am totally biased towards him, cause if he left the dirty antics out of his game, he would be absolutely top class for me and would genuinely love to have had him in the green and gold (even as he is I probably still would like to have had him togging for Donegal).
However, in my opinion, if any young guys can remember him striking out when he was playing and now being rewarded as a player to be put in this position it promotes the way he conducted himself, also for an older guy like me it shows how RTE have a lack of respect for the etiquette of the game.
I appreciate in advance that not everyone will agree with me, but as a player the man just let himeslf down to many times to be in that postion...

hill16no1man, then why were tyrone trying so hard to get it out of ballybofey, and similarly, why were donegal at such pains to keep it there?

Usually each year, RTE comes out and announces the list of games they will cover. Where can I find this list of games? I haven't seen it this year yet. Thanks.

cannot agree at all as most players have been sent off or done something wrong in their lifes there all human. theres no doubting his ability to be a pundit and thats what he is being paid to do on the sunday game analyze games and even the great joe brolly was learning from him on sunday night.tohill has been sent off and davis and o hara in their time sure peter canavan was involved in an international rules brawl and he still is on as a pundit dont see why whelan should be the only one singled out.

because they are only getting 7 thousand tickets for the match and there supporters who want to go to the game cannot get tickets. donegal have a manager who is fixated on the mental approach and thats what he will put into his players head

hill16no1man, frankly nonsense. Let me just go to the bottom line here, if what you say is true then can you explain why teams generally win more games at home than away?

But brolly clearly does think Donegal are the benchmark for the rest of the pack to chase. The fact donegal were relegated is a non-factor, in his mind they are the best. He is paid to give his opinion and thats what he did during the league final.
Dont get me wrong, I dont really like the sometimes personal comments he says about amateur players/coaches but I do understand why he talks about donegal so much. And not to pick a fight with you, but do you really not think home advantage exists? Would ya get your head out of the fog man!

hill16no1man, go raibh míle maith agat. Do you know also the TV3 schedule? I notive a distinct lack of provincial football finals from that list, as well as no games at all on July 21st. Thanks

but it was stated at the present time ,donegal cannot be the best team in the country at present time when they got relegated from division one and the other two teams are playing in the league final. like i stated home advantage is a mental thing.

Going by your rationale not many of the current Donegal squad will make it into the RTE studio!
