Walking up the Hill in Clones on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon and stopping for a pint on the way back to talk about our exploits, good or bad. Breffni Abu.

The sight of the crowd, the roar that goes up with every score, just being amongst your own county folk when your team is doing well (a rarity for the likes of me). Also being secure in the knowledge that Monaghan will never win Sam. Ever.

The whole day is great.Train journey up is great craic. A pint in the Palace Bar and the long walk up to Croke Park wondering how the game will go. The post mortem of the game on the return train journey.

Drinkin a few pints on a beautiful Summers day down on the Prom in Galway, before marching up to Pearse Stadium for the game you've been waiting for all Winter. A couple of bags of cheese and onion, a bar of Fruit and Nut... waiting like a child on Christmas morning for the anthems and the throw in. The roar that greets every score, the groans and the knot in the stomach when you're a point up with 5 left and the ball is given away on your own 45. The banter with the opposition, the post mortems, the anticipation of another day out in a couple of weeks if you've scraped through.

And that's just for the first round! The train up to Croker and the hoopla around that is a whole other kettle of fish.

Can't beat it!

Longest journey was best example of a day out at a championship match. Believe what you want my Limerick friend. Whats matters is my match attendance and am the one who knows that.

Master - That's the beauty of a dual county, we're never too far away from throwing on the jersey and getting a day out up there.
Ye must have had a few great post-mortems on the 6 'o clock Heuston Westport train on the 3rd Sunday in September over the years I'd say, with the Intersport jerseys welded to ye after the sweat in the sun and the straw hats hanging over ye're heads. I always imagine some fella singing 'To Win Just Once' by the Saw Docs aswell. 'There's always next year I suppose'.

The Craic before the match, cheese burgers, cider, high fielding, long diagonal balls into the chest, more cider, Sunday game, joe brolly and Spillane. No other Sunday comes close.

Ah so when all else fails you pretend to follow hurling. 'So who is this canning fella anyway, is joe cooney not starting?'

Indeed when we head home we say there is always next year. Whereas the galway lads say, I wonder what dublin will be like in 2025...

Ah yea. A bucket load of pints on the night before the game to smooth the nerves. Get up next morning and your stomach is in a knot and you don't know if its the nreves or if the world is going to fall out of your bottom.

After a quick self diagnosis you decide its definitely the nerves and you tear into a fry up. Twenty minutes later the world does fall out of your bottom. Its then a case of having to settle the stomach before the trip up the road.

Up around Rathcoole Mr. Sphincter decides to sing a bar or two of 'Shout' from Tears for Fears. After a few butt clenching exercises the tide is stemmed and your sorted for the day.

A couple of early gargles purely for medicinal purposes and you take your seat 30 minutes before throw in. 70+ minutes of nail-biting, shouting, jaysus-ing and cursing. Timing is everything at this stage because you need to be back in the local on time for The Sunday Game to abuse Brolly/Spillane/Your Body/The Barman. Home after closing time weary eyed and ready for more the week after.

Fit in a healthy, or probably slightly unhealthy dose of panadols on the morning sedico and that generally sums it up alright sedico.

After stepping into the field
there is no way out
even before you start the game
you hear the fans shout

The players then sing Amhrán na bhFiann
its football......
the most beautiful game.....

And when the whistle blows
the crowd starts their roar
in the 70 tensed minutes
the players got to score

Football is friendly only in name
because friendliness is not meant for football....
the most beautiful game....

So when the hard tackles go in
and injured fellow goes out
the crowd becomes furious
and starts to shout

Even after breaking one's leg
there seems to be no shame
because its football....
the most beautiful game....

Games in Clones, it is a divil to get in and out of,
but the stadium is a special place.
