Goalkeepers taking free kicks

Feels a bit like place kickers in American football. Slows the game down badly.

A player is a player is a player no matter what position they are in and are all entitled to take the frees! If it was a full back taking the frees would you still have the same gripe!....get over it lad!

I will never forget a kerry lad beside me in the corporate box in AI Final 2011 remark in his 'yerra' accent early in the game when Cluxton came up to take a free "Yerra, its a poor situation when a team needs its goalkeeper to take its frees!".....the ball went over the bar of course, but little did he know how stuipid he would be made to look come the 71st minute of the game!!!
Thats how cumuppance gets doled out to arrogance in good order!

Incidently, I tracked down where this ordinary eejit got his corporate box ticket from and seen to it that the person he got it from (not one of my employees) never got corporate tickets to distribute again and just stopped short of looking for him to get the sack! Corporate box tickets are only to be distributed to folk who fit in with such class....not gruff ordinary folk!

I don't have an issue with it if they're good enough. It does slow things down a lot though especially at the rate Cluxton comes up the field!!!

Cluxton and Morgan (and I'm sure there are many others...) are very accurate groundkickers so it makes sense that they are good free/45 takers.

Yes it slows up the game but these also good scoring oppourtunities...45s and frees contribute to a huge amount of scores in the modern game...

Snufalufagus you must have a very high opinion of yourself! No doubt you'd struggle to sit out with the "common folk" on matchday!

Anyway, I think that Cluxton is very good but I do feel that between the 6 best FORWARDS within a county, at least one of them should be top class at free's, their job is to score and should be able to do so from a placed ball

I must admit I hate it. Its a waste of time.
I agree that any play should be allowed take them but there shiuld be time limit.

this wont be introduced but would get rd of this problem.
Btw snuff it is a bad sign when no outfield player can take a 45 so dont see why this guys comment sounded bad by the 71st minute.
He never claimed cluxton wasnt good at them because he is but the time wasted by him and morgan is a joke.

I dont agree there are lads in Dublin who can kick 45's but are not good enough for the Dublin 6. Mark Vaughan is clearly one of them still kicks 45's for Crokes regularly when he gets a chance but he is not good enough for Dublin so i dont think he should be there to kick frees. Kerry have Bryan Sheehan he plays midfield should they drop someone from their forward players to bring in a player to kick frees even though they have Sheehan i wouldnt.

No problem with it at all.
Alot of teams have proper place kickers but they choose too kick from hand.
Dont know what the statistics are on place kicking versus from the hand, but I'd say less chance of error if kicking from the ground.
Nothing sickens a team more than scoring a free from 45-60 metres out.
Was it Derek Duggan from Roscommon who was mighty at it years ago.

I'm not saying these fellas should be playing, but of the best 6 forwards in any given county, at least one should be capable of kicking frees.

If they can kick them let them at it. However it does reaveal that teams who need there keeper taking 45s don't have long ranger point takers. The likes of Cluxton should be made run the pitch to take it and not stroll up at his ease.

I have a question:

What special rules apply to a goalkeeper that are different to those of an outfield player?

And here is another question:

What special rules apply to an outfield player that are different to those of a goalkeeper?

Answer to both:

You are a forward or a back or a goalkeeper because its your best position on the team (county goalkeepers who play outfield for club etc) and no special rules apply to you either in a good way or a bad way!!

When I was a kid, we used to have an outfield player take the goalkeepers kick outs! No rule against it because a player is a player is a player...no discrimation against a players field position! As the Yanks would say:...."Go Figure"!

End of discussion.....close thread!

No problem with it all...obviously and never will after 2011 with Cluxton. As for the time it takes thats up to the ref to add it on at the end and not the players problem.

How dare they come outside the small square!

snuf you ask what rules are different and there are a few involved when they are in their square.
in american football there is a timer where they have to make a player before a certain interval.

if a goalkeeper takes 2 minutes to kick the ball out after score they are penalised for time wasting so why can this not be the same for frees.
the gomeeper can take the frees but only if they can get up and kick it in the allocated time.

This wont be done but it could.

Like all free takers there should be a time limit and it should be from when the free is awarded not when the kicker gets to the ball.

It takes even longer to take a 45/65 in football/hurling. Add to that the amount of times players kick the ball away, sit on/lie on it, don't move quick enough etc etc Goalies taking frees/45/65's should be the least of time wasting.

Jeeze your going back a few years now.... If I remember correctly that kick was to bring the 91 connacht final to a replay. He Scored a cracker of a goal in the AI semi v Meath that year too I think.

There should be a time limit, no question. If a team wants their goalkeeper, or full back for that matter, to take frees then it is up to themselves to have him up in time to take the kick. If they have an issue with making their keeper sprint up the field before taking a free then they can have a forward take it next time.

Is that the same corporate box as the much distinguished ballboy, formerly of this parish.
