strange nobody mentions big neil gallagher. Donegal wouldnt have beat Cork without him last year. Best Fielder in Ireland and while he does go on big solo runs he is solid in possession.

I would always play a fielder with a playmaker/runner

like other if i have cavanagh I would play him in forward but when fit he can play 8-15.

I understand Flynn will be off to Oz by the year is out! Will be a loss if it goes through. I wouldn't expect this kid to come home like Heslin, Kilkenny though..

RD, what about Gillipse from Meath? I agree with you regarding Murphy. A class act.

Sean Cavanagh,Neil Gallagher the two best for me. I don't see the Aidan Walsh hype. He's a good footballer that will probably become a good forward however when he comes up against any decent midfielde he struggles more often than not.

Walsh still only a young fella. How many games did cavanagh or gallagher dominate at his age! For me he's one of the best about and will only get better!

This is probably the hardest one of all. Most county's have at one top class midfielder, Aidan Walsh, Sean Cavanagh, Anthony Maher, John Galvin, Paddy Keenan, Michael D McAuley, Brendan Murphy, Aidan O Shea, Neil Gallagher, John Heslin and there's probably more to add.
08.Paddy Keenan
09.Aidan O Shea
For the number of years Keenan and O Shea have produced consistently for Louth and Mayo, both have great work rate and are excellent fielders of the ball. Well able to kick a score aswell everything for a modern midfielder.

______

I used to think he was way overhyped when he was younger, hes always been fairly strong around the middle but used to give the ball away alot and his shooting was terrible. I didn't think he deserved his all star in 2010 and didn't buy the hype, but now I think hes improved his attacking game alot and doesn't give the ball away as much. I can't remember him bottling it against big performers although he did go missing against Dublin earlier in the league despite scoring an early goal.

Its a bit strange I'm arguing both sides now, but to be fair Cavanaghs been dominating since he was even younger than Walsh probably.

Gillespies not at that level Matthew.

Keenan and Cavanagh are probably in decline.

I think Brendan Murphy and Aidan Walsh.

Mathew, no not yet with regard to Gillespie, maybe he will come good this year still young enough, but also inconsistent.
Truth be told meath haven't had a top midfielder since john MC.

Sean Cavanagh is the best by a long shot, Tyrone are a completely differant team without him, Don't know aht I would class as the second best, I've great time for Aidan O'Shea from Mayo, I am suprised more have not mentioned anythony Maher from Kerry, now I'm not saying he is in teh top 2 but not many big names have beaten him and he always plays a consistant game

Imo I don't think s cavanagh is a midfielder. Better at half forward and allowed to come deep to make runs. If I was selecting my best 15 I Wouldn't have him at midfielder. One of the best fotballers in the country.

Although Paddy(Keenan)wears the no.8 Louth jersey his play is not limited to that particular area of the field, he's a trojan defender when need be and a prolific score getter also.

You could put your house on him plucking a high dropping ball out of the air in a crowded goal mouth and within a short number seconds he'd be at the other end of the field popping the ball over the bar.

All round footballer if you ask me.

Louth's only ever All-Star, probably the county's finest ever footballer, and an absolute gentleman to boot.

Sadly the era of the midfield kings and high fielding is becoming a thing of the past. Nowadays teams like to kick it short or to the wings and play a running game.
