Greatest comeback ever? Club or county

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Lads, was just at a football match there and witnessed an 'almost-being'. One team 11 points down at half time, getting destroyed, coming back to within a point at the end only to shoot wide in the last second. I was wondering what other peoples actual comeback stories are like?

Tipp won the all Ireland minor football title in 2011.Earlier that year they were 11 points down to Kerry in the Munster championship, and ended up winning.

From my own club, Kilcullen coming back to from 11 points down to tournament favourites Johnstownbridge to win by two in 2011.

In county, I'll have to hand it to Jody Devine in extra time in the first 97 replay for Meath. Best game I ever saw.

Am I correct in saying Meath were 11 or 12 down V Westmeath about 12 years ago and came back to win or maybe they took it to replay

Down's comeback last year in the USFC against Monaghan was fairly impressive.

1. Offaly's amazing comeback against Limerick in the '94 all-Ireland hurling final - they were 5 points down with 5 minutes left and won by 6.
2. Fermanagh led Armagh by 10 points with a couple of minutes of normal time remaining in a championship match in the early nineties and Armagh came back to win by a point. 3. I believe Meath were 16 points down to Offaly early in the second-half of the 1970 Leinster final and won by a point - all the more impressive when you consider that Offaly won the all-Ireland in each of the next two years.
4. I played a junior league game years ago where we were 10 points down at half-time and won by 3!

the junior(b) team of my club lost the first round of their county league, got hammered, and got hammered in second game as well, the team they played second met them in the semi final and were down by 8 points to 1 at half time but won by 2 points, then the team that hammered them in the first game met them in the final, this time instead of getting hammered they won by 5 points.

There have been may great comebacks, but these two jump to mind. The Tyrone game because we twice looked dead and buried in the 2nd half, and the Armagh/Fermanagh match as it was one of the all-time great escapes/robberies at any level!

2003 Ulster Final: Tyrone 1-17 Down 4-08
Down led by 3-08 to 0-08 with 22 minutes remaining, but Tyrone scored 1-6 without reply to level the scores with 10 minutes left. Down then got a fourth goal, but Tyrone again came back, hitting the last 3 points to secure a draw. 2 comebacks for the price of 1.

1993 Ulster Preliminary Round Replay: Armagh 4-08 Fermanagh 0-16
Fermanagh, having dominated the game, led by 7 or 8 points in the Athletic Grounds with about 5 minutes left, before Armagh's Denis Holywood scored 2 goals. The home side were still 2 points down deep into injury time, when big John Grimley got on the end of a long ball and fired to the net with the last kick of the game.

Offaly's comeback against Clare in '94 has to be the high watermark of comebacks for me.
Honorable mention goes to Tipp's comebacks against Cork in the Munster final in '91 (draw and replay)

Monaghan were 7 down against Derry with about 10 mins to go in 92 ulster championship, scored 3 goals in a couple of mins to go 2 up then let in a goal and had to score a late point to bring it to a replay. One of the first games i was at amazing finish.

Not a comeback, but when I was a kid we played in the 'Millenium Shield' Final in 1988 of course against St. Judes. We lost to these giants by a point. Our manager smelt a fish that they had a load of overage players as we hardly recognised any of them having only played them a few weeks before. DCC investigation launched and found 9 of their starting 15 players were from a team a year older than us. Result: Shield confiscated from Judes some weeks later after we had already got our runners-up medals (having only lost by a point which shows how good we were, Judes knew we would hammer them with their real team out). Outcome: Club awards night the chairman made a speech and presented us with the shield and our winners medals and came out with the now famous line: "Well done boys, ye are the only team in the history of the GAA to ever come 'first and second' in any competition!!!"......and I have the silver and gold medals to this day to prove it!!

I remember playing a club hurling game against our rivals Slashers. We were down 3-11 to 0-6 with 15 mins left. When all was said and done we won 6-9 to 3-13!! I don't think Slashers fully got over it as a few years later they didn't have a senior hurling club!!

????

Limerick you mean.

Offaly played Limerick in 1994 and Clare in 1995.

They came back sensationally in 94 v Limerick but were themselves pipped in the last 10 minutes v Clare in 1995

94 Offaly v Limerick, 5 down, 5 to go won by 6

82 Offaly v Kerry, 4 down, 4 to go, 2 pointed freess & then Seamus Darby goal to win by 2

Galway Abu: 1970: we were 11 up & lost. Never forget in last few mins our big midfielder Kieran Claffey (RIP) raced from his own half right through the defence and smashed a shot for the winner smack off the cross-bar and back out over his head.A few lessons learned & a few defensive changes & won next 2 Sams before losing the 73 semi

The 1990 Ulster Semi final between Down & Armagh where Armagh were tanking Down when James McCartan got two late goals and with another point or two the game was drawn. I cant remember the score difference before the comeback but it was significant. It was so bad the brother in law was begging me to leave at half time. The ground was emptying late on when the roars brought some running back in again.

Our under 14s were 7 - 6 to 1 - 0 behind at half time one time and came back to win by a point! I also have a recollection of Dublin hurlers beating Waterford years ago by 15/16 points in Dungarvan with Force 10 hurricane behind them, only to hang on by a point in the end.
