Can anyone please explain the system or process for selecting referees for inter county league games.

Yes, you get the best referees in the country and you put them in the div 1 and 2 matches.

Particularly get good refs for any televised games and games involving the top teams.

For the lower divisions and weaker teams, who cares.

After looking at two mad sending offs in the hurling club final they must be selected using the electoral rolls.

Its not even about the best referees, but refs from a county in the same division is rediculous, we had a Fermanagh ref (who are also in div3) for our game v Cavan, who apparently works in Cavan town, now that was a joke.

They use the random number generator.

In the Kerry/Wicklow game yesterday the fouled player was sent off and had a free against him.

Higgins from fermanagh reffed mayo/kildare last night and was bad for both teams but ultimately gave a poor decision which led to kildare goal and cost mayo the game. having said that mayo can only blame themselves and of course manager

Go away out of that heal. He rode Kildare and gave Mayo most of the 50:50's to you a large amount were scorable.. That Kelly tackle was perfect nothing wrong with it at all.

The sending offs for Kolcormac Kil. were merited, = a deliberate strike with the hurl is a red card. In this instance the ref was correct

Is the standard really dropping? It is not an easy job. In today's world with social media, video replays, youtube etc, every decision a ref makes is analysed to death. I don't think there are many there who would be a ref and this is coming from someone who often shouts against decisions a ref might give (like us all)

Aidan O'Shea dragged his marker down while in posession about 5 or 6 times and kept getting frees for it. He eventually got booked after getting so complacent about it that he didn't even try and hide it. It really seemed to be a deliberate tactic of Mayo's to pull defenders into tackles and go to ground, it happened so often. The free count ended up 38-17 in Mayo's favour! Bad to both teams my eye. He gave ye everything. It took unbelievable discipline from Kildare to defend at the end with a ref so eager to give ye scoreable frees.

As for the game changer that cost ye the game.... The initial decision regarding the hit on the Mayo fella was nowhere near a clear foul the Mayo management tried to make out after the game, he went in with the shoulder and yes probably caught him in the back but either way when the whistle didn't go the player on the ground trapped the ball preventing the Kildare player picking it up which was obviously a clear free to us. But yes apparently that was the game changer because we were now certainties to score a goal from out on the wing in our own half. After that it was just a simple matter of four Kildare players passing the ball between each other over 80-90 yards to get up and get the goal. Definitely the referees fault that one... It was just like he gave us a penalty!

How are refs appointed? Well Kevin McStay makes an intersting point with the ref for the club final - P. Hughes - when he said that he thought that it was unfair to him to be appointed after his club Crossmaglen were beaten by St Brigid's.

So, when you see that appointment - it would make you wonder. According to McStay - P. Hughes appointment put him under more pressure.

I suppose they are trying to bring forward some referees and also give the big games to the best - simple really!

Kevin McStay was making the point that Padraic Hughes was under more pressure to referee the game as his club had been beaten by Brigids. He said that he could and would talk about it as Brigids had won the game. I think the point he tries to make is that Hughes should not have been appointed. He has a point but some would argue that a referees inpartiality should not be questioned if they are at the level to referee an All Ireland final no matter where they are from!

There will I am sure be many on now who will name and cast a shadow over many referees regarding their impartiality over the years... or even weeks!

My point earlier was not to question any individual refs, its more a case of where they are from, and is there a need to let that situation arise in the first place.

From what I can see, most of the div 3 games are being reffed by refs whose home county play in div 3. Seen similar examples in div 2 and one.

Like last weekend, the Cavan v Fermangh game had a Sligo ref, there was a late penalty call and swung the game for Fermanagh. The result left cavan in a dog fight with SLIGO.
Meath have twice been reffed by 2 different Fermangh refs, and still have to play Fermanagh later in the league.

Last year I remember the same thing with a Meath ref being in charge if Kildare/Louth, while Meath were in the same division.
