Karl Lacey - Footballer of the Year - Spat on??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just a note on the connection between league performance and AI winners as some posters seem to think the league means damn all.
Of the last 12 AI winners 7 have played in the league final in the year of their AI success. 5 winning both in the same year and 2 winning AI but losing league. 2 counties lost both finals in the same year. Thats a 58% success rate in AI for league finalists.

Also the view that Kerry rest up for winter, Kerry have played in 7 of the last 12 AIs, winning 4. In those same 7 years they appeared in 4 league finals, winning 3. Thats a rate of 57% (see the similarity) of their AI appearances were in the same year as they appeared in league final.

So statistics show that if you perform well in league you have a better chance of making AI final. I know there 42% who are exceptions but this proves it can be a factor.
And before certain Leinster posters think this is a Kildare post suggesting we, because of winning 3 league matches, think we will win Sam, its not. Still think come late summer we be in top 4-6.

I think people are missing the point here. I accept everything you say about counties who perform well in the league also doing well in the championship. The facts are self evident.

My point is that JMcG has decided to take a different approach. He uses the league to try different things & new players & if the league goes well then great and if it doesn't well thats fair enough too. It doesn't mean that one approach is right & the other is wrong it's more a case of what works for each team.

Donegal just survived last year & then went on from there so you can hardly blame them for taking the same approach this year.

At the risk of posting on topic. As expected the Tyrone county board have acted swiftly to give the moron a lengthy ban, precise details have not been released at this time.
County Chairman Ciaran Mc Laughlin is quoted as saying:-

"When the incident was brought to our attention we acted swiftly and we did immediately go to the player involved," McLaughlin said.
"We expressed our disgust and issued sincere apologies to him, and his team, for the incident which had occurred and which we're currently dealing with.
"I categorically condemn the incident. I'm not sure what an individual is thinking when he does something like what has been alleged.
"We are all Gaels playing our national games and that's why I would urge, that all of our members revisit their behaviour at our games and ensure that they are always behaving as we would expect from our players to the very highest levels," McLaughlin added.

I'd call on those who claimed the County board would do nothing to man up and apologise for it and those opportunists who took advantage of this awful incident to wind their necks in - as an incident like this could be comining to a stadium like yours from one of your own soon. My response may not be as temperate.

This Dubes chap is quality. He's getting his guidance from his Fermanagh housemates.
That's like the US asking Israel for a heads up on Gaza.

MuckRoss, not pointed at you, as an earlier poster said diff folks, diff strokes. Can't argue with JmcG logic, for Donegal the proof of their approach is in the success but for some you would think that league has no bearing what so ever. Maybe its because they don't bother going...
Back to the thread, I have attended soccer across the water and its a different world, the tension, security etc. I was always proud to bring British relations/friends etc to a big GAA match and watch their amazement and pleasure at the intermingled fans and the slagging and banter without any real threat.
And overall it is still the same, you will always get an occasional moron but they need to banned asap and the ban has to be backed up. Love travelling around the country to different counties for a game. Very seldom any hassle or trouble and if all the real fans report, condemn and silence the morons we can help keep it that way

Fair play to the Tyrone County Board in doing what any rational county board would do. I have only seen positive response from the Tyrone posters to what was a disgusting act and hopefully the suspension fits the crime as this person wouldn't and shouldn't be welcomed near any GAA ground, his own club included!!

Agree Tir Connaill there have unfortunately been a couple of notable exceptions.
I would hope his club will be the easiest to enforce. Always puzzles me how this can work practically without circulating widely his details. Assume in needs to be self-policing starting with his own club and those who know him.
I'm told the guy is a well known nutter and his actions absolutely corroborate this.

Should this guy not be named & shamed like they do across the water in similar circumstances?
Unless this is done there will always be the suspicion that while all the right noises are made re talking about bans, nothing will happen after the furore dies down.

I've no doubt something has happened but struggle with how it's implemented. I personally would like him named and shamed but there must be some restriciton on that as it seems the logical punishment and to publicise his ban in an effort to police it.

Fair play to the Tyrone Co Board and the Tyrone posters on here who have unanimously condemned he incident. Credit where credit is due!

Disgusting act by Cookstown player. A nice lenghty ban awaits i hope. Paul Galvin is no angel but spitting is for cowards.

There must be a bad dose of the flu requiring lots of throat clearing going round in Tyrone at the moment.

So apparently an unnamed individual may have received some sort of punishment or ban the details of which, including venues, timespan etc are unspecified.

Well thats that sorted so. Marvellous stuff from Tyrone.

In light of Kevin O'Brien being named as the player who bit McBrearty, I just wondered what the outcome was of the investigation into the lunatic who spat at Karl Lacey.

Maybe I missed something, but this assault seems to have just died a death.

Maybe someone from Tyrone could bring us up to date.
