What can we do?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I reckon there needs to be an important distinction made here. Some posters are clearly referring to certain others as wums etc but these "alleged" wums would also consider these eh "allegers", bear with me ha, as wums etc, it's just the flip side of the coin, everyone one is guilty to a certain extent in these situations and these are actually the situations that get good debate going. There are however a number of posters and regardless if they are wums or great craic or otherwise actually contribute nothing constructive to the board. Admin should be fit to spot these easily though but they don't so I reckon not much will change, we just need to be more proactive about it ourselves.

1337823 Very few original posters left , there was some craic back then pre passwords - NavyNBlue, Clarke95, Richie Rich, some crazy Geraghty fan from Meath then the ballboy era - always enjoyed his tales of big screens & helicopters. The Non GAA forum sparked an influx of political extremists from a certain province, unfortunately admins had no choice but to close. Still some good posters around now , is SammytheBull still around????

There's no need for petty swipes and generalisations like that on this thread badmonkey. You should know better than that.

How about limiting the number of characters you can use per post, it would certainly cut down on some of those long, punctuation lite rants we see and would force you to make your point a little more succinct? I often contribute on the BBC and I think you are limited to 160 characters per post, food for thought.

Basically a two minute survey on what people think of the site. Its all tick the box bar at the end where you have a choice to say what can be improved or something like that. I cannot remember exactly what the question was but it gave me a chance to say how the site could be imrpoved..

It's a start alright, can't imagine the admins will learn a whole lot from the tick the box / rating questions though.

Some of the questions were more focused on the layout and content of the website and how user friendly it is rather than focusing on the forum side of things, which I think is what the vast majority of users would have an issue with.

Felt like I was typing out an essay in that little suggestion box part at the end though.

In fairness I think you have summed it up well breffni. People are always going to disagree on things, the important thing is that people are making an effort to comment on the subject at hand. If that isnt happening then the post offers nothing constructive, and generally, if it isnt offering anything constructive, then what it is actually offering is quite the opposite.

As regards the pop-up. I could be wrong but I dont think that has anything to do with this in all honesty. Websites carry out those surveys routinely enough. I mean there wasnt even a section about forums or anything even resembling forums. I dont think the forum is as important to the site as some of us might like to think it is. Hence the little input from admins...

Avoid threads once they're over 5 or 6 pages. (oops!!). By then they'll have degenerated into a verbal bitch-slapping contest

Avoid the my county/country right or wrong threads. Those posters are beyond reasoned debate

Have more wimmin here. Too much testosterone stunts brain cell growth. Fact

Have more Kilkenny posters here. (In the forlorn hope it might distract them from playing hurling)

If the same poster has featured more than 5 times in a thread then sadly that thread has become infected (The latin term is infestusthurlesbluesitus) and needs to be put down.

Anyone who sources me a ticket for the AI Final can say what he/she likes, as often as they like and I'll agree wholeheartedly

Quality over quantity. Being a multiple poster means knowt to the rest of us.

Serve an apprenticeship on your own home county forum first. Then when your peers deem you worthy of representing our views on the public forum you carry an L plate beside your name for the first season.

Adopt a fellow poster. Become his/her mentor. Chide him/her if he/she misbehaves. Guide them and encourage them when they make their first fledgling steps from their own county forum into the big scary world of the public forum

It's up to yourselves to be responsible

I guess that's the only way forward.

Everyone has their part to play.

It's not rocket science but it's not the first time theres been a thread like this

All the wise men harp up and as I said previously dont back up what they preach

Maroonaitc: excellent points. It would take a Galway man.

Jackeen: The poll asked if there were too many posters from Dublin and Mayo here, and whether or not they should all just be put on an island, Hunger Games style, so the rest of us can get on with it.

:)

Seems fair enough. It is a GAA forum after all. Banter is ok, but these long essays cutting at counties shouldnt be allowed.

That's just the reality of what happened, what was a very enjoyable forum closed because of it. All users are entitled
to feel aggrieved by it. Didn't mean it as a generalisation. Would love to go back and see some of the first GPA threads with Jimbo
