Ray McCarron and Eamonn Murphy from Monaghan,im my opinion Murphy was the second best target man in the country during the 8o's after Bomber Liston.

bennybunny,
no probs,
i remember this one, from the great Micheal o muircheartaigh.
commentating on an Inter-county match between Dublin and Sligo:
"I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them, the priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey! 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage, it's a goal. So much for religion

Did a bit of research and found a few names.

A McLoughlin from Burt in Donegal held Jimmy Doyle scoreless from play in a Railway Cup match once. Mick Stafford Donegal was a regular no. 10 for Ulster in the sixties V. Owens Tyrone played for Ulster in a Railway Cup final. A McShea of Fermanagh also hurled for Ulster. In the twenties Pat McDonald of Cavan won Fitzgibbons with UCD. I think he was a Dublin sub afterwards and may have won All Irelands as well.

Wexford born Dave Synnott was Mayo's regular goalkeeper for years, played about 5 years for Connacht and won two railway cup medals, thinks hes the only non Galway player to win more then one. Joe Henry during the eighties was one if the very few non Galway hurlers to play regularly for Connacht. Paul Seevers from Sligo who i seen play once was a great player and may have won a Railway Cup? A Colm Kelly from Roscommon seems that have been a good player. Also one or two Roscommon Connaughtons hurled with New York during the 50's/60's at a time when hurling was very strong there. The Railway Cup final of 1969 ( draw and replay ) featured two Sligo players on the Connacht team, Tipp-born Mick Burke no.5 and Wexford-born Willie Murphy no. 10. The only Leitrim player seems to have been was Limerick-born Tommie O'Riordan was a Connacht sub once in the late fifties

Also Kildare seem to have had a great team during the 70's and were unlucky not to make a Leinster final

A major name must be Brian Roper of Donegal who played 14 seasons in the green and gold, never won a Provincial Title but did win the league in 2007. 159 appearances for Donegal between 1996 and 2009.

In the last 15-20 years...

Football: Declan Browne, John Galvin, Mattie Forde (can't believe he hasn't been mentioned), Micheal Meehan for Galway anyone? (has a club one with Caltra I know). Ciaran McDonald and James Nallen from Mayo (although they both have club All Irelands), you could name a truck load of hard luck cases from Mayo, McHale, James Horan Willie Joe etc.. Benny Coulter, Ciaran Whelan (how unlucky was he? started the year after a Dubs win, ended the year before their next!), Eamonn O Hara maybe? Dessie Dolan for Westmeath, Paul Barden from Longford could well be one of the best not to have won an All Star.

The list is fairly exhaustive...

Hurling: Mainly players from Galway (again- more club medals than they know what do with) , Waterford and Limerick (Kevin Broderick- dunno if he was mentioned). An outside bet for recent times- Tony Griffin of Clare? Very consistent, an All Star and two nominations playing for a Clare at a low ebb, probably never even really saw the best of him. James Young- always seemed to beswimming against the tidein Laois

I don't have a great knowledge of any players who hurled over 20 years ago, so here's some of the more modern players that i would pick in Hurling:

Galway: Ollie and Joe Canning, Kevin Broderick, Eugene Cloonan, Joe Rabbitte.

Limerick: Ciaran Carey, Gary Kirby.

Waterford: Tony Browne, John Mullane, Ken McGrath, Dan Shanahan, Paul Flynn, Eoin Kelly, Brick Walsh, Fergal Hartley.

A wee bit premature you would have to say to be adding Joe Canning to this list considering he is only 23, hopefully as a Galway man we won't be adding his name to that list in seven or eight year's time. As regards the rest can't argue with any of them.

Seanie Johnston made a big mistake moving to Kildare. He moved from the best club in Cavan to an average Kildare club. Cavan are making strides in the underage ranks and should win an Ulster in the next 5-6 years whereas if Kildare dont do anything this year its all over for them.

Been doing it for Limerick for years now, often against what were the best midfielders in the game like Darragh O Se and Nicholas Murphy. Shame he's been ruined with injuries in the last couple of years. Deserved at least a Munster medal.

A trooper for the green and gold. Never gave an inch and was one of the men who could always be relied on. Unlike others from that era I could mention.

A travesty the likes of him and Sweeney, Monaghan etc never won anything other than the league.
