English Commentary on Club Championship

TG4 don't say the names in Irish anymore do they? I know they used but I thought they changed their policy on that a few years ago and now say the name in English but the rest of sentence in Irish.

Maybe rather than TG4 changing to creating a red button for you, you could learn some of the Irish language. Sports commentary is pretty specific language with the same words used over and over again. Won't take you long.

You don't have to study it. If you listen to the commentary and you see the ball being kicked wide and then you see the ball being kicked wide again, if you hear the same phrase, the chances are the commentator is saying that ball has been kicked wide. Wait for the third wide just to be sure.

1306769 Is there any TV stations ever going to cover the Club Championships in the English language as I have to say it spoils it for me as a non-Irish speaker. TV4 have so many good GAA matches e.g. Club Championships, U21 All Irelands, etc. which have been top drawer this past year. A sister station or a red button option would be great where the matches could be watched with English commentators.

Are you serious? Its not in TG4's remit nor interest to provise red buttons or any of the kind of rubbish. The games are not on any other channels because the others channels don't see any use in covering them. TG4 should be congratulated and respected for their coverage not told to change their service. Only in Ireland would something like this be questioned.

Just to add TG4 have regulary have over 100,000 as viewing fighures for their coverage (over 150,000 watched the Thjurles Sarfields-De la Salle game recently). If RTÉ had any respect and understanding of Irish society they would have provided coverage for club games and league games long before TG4 was even founded.

1306972 i composed a very good post a number of years ago on this subject.
realistically tg4 aren't doing much in terms of promoting are games.
the fact is the younger generation have no interest in the club and under 21 championships. or even the national league.
why because its on tg4 in irish. TG4 is not considered a "cool" station so the young dont watch it.. simple as.
compare that to the hype of the all ireland in the summer. on RTE in english.
Solution: Give some more games to RTE...
FACT

RTÉ do not one want to cover these gaes. FACT (look at my above post)

Was your above FACT based on viewing figures? I'd doubt it. Do you even know the viewing figures? I'd also doubt it.

..and here was me thinking that Irish was beat into us!!! If it was bet into us we would all understand it!

Not having a go. Just a general thought that came to my head. Very good point. That is the best way to learn a langage. That is the way baby's learn to talk.

part of being a member of the GAA is to uphold and promote the Irish language so we should all make an effort to learn our native language if we are true Gaels.

my county colleague (middle row keyboard) is way off the mark.. TG4 is probably the only "cool" station in the country.

Very true S Goldrick. In fact, the word Gael is actuall an Irish word...and the language of the Gael is Gaeilge. Its amazing how many anti Irish language 'Gaeil' there are out there!

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Premier Sports showed the Crokes/Castlehaven game on Sunday with English commentary. It was the TG4 pictures, but they didn't use any of the sound, including the half-time analysis.

Who criticised TG4? Cracking station. Films, sport, good documentaries. What more does a man want or need?

Can you get Premier Sports in Antrim?
That shows TG4 coverage with an english speaking commentator, its usually not great but its better than it used to be kinda sounds like the boring commentry you get in the bookies.

Don't bother getting premier sports, I have had it for the last year and its gaa coverage has gone very bad, I dont think they have shown any club games at all this year, they mainly seem to show nrl or south american soccer. I think I will be giving it the boot.

Here's a realistic option, Learn irish. TG4 promotes irish not offer english on the red button, it does a better job than the GAA.

Bennybunny is spot on. Anyone who learned Irish in school, as I assume most of you did, would be able to follow the commentary easily enough if you made the effort. And it is good practise. TG4 is an excellent station and is way ahead of RTE on so many levels, and with a fraction of their budget. I'd given them franchise for all GAA games.
