English Commentary on Club Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Is there any TV stations ever going to cover the Club Championships in the English language as I have to say it spoils it for me as a non-Irish speaker. TV4 have so many good GAA matches e.g. Club Championships, U21 All Irelands, etc. which have been top drawer this past year. A sister station or a red button option would be great where the matches could be watched with English commentators.

In fairness that's not TG4's remit and if it wasn't for them the games wouldn't be on TV at all.

TG4 provide an excellent service and should be promoted to keep doing it, not complained about. Where were RTE for all the years before TG4 to show it? Exactly.

They are doing a great job. Write to them and ask them to put a red button option for English commentary if you wish. I don't see why they should bother, however. I am glad that they dedicate time to it.

How does it spoil it for you?

When you're at a game does one of your mates whisper commentary into your ear all the way through?!

mesamis is spot on i rather not having commentary i hate it much rather go to games not have to hear them.
good idea would be to have just the stadium noise and no commentary option on all sports.

Yes it would be great to get rid of the commentary and just have the stadium noise, the tg4 commentators aren't the worst though and certainly better than rte.

Don't get me wrong I totally agree that TG4 are providing a brilliant service with great coverage of GAA matches. Also agree that Rte have dropped the ball due to finances or otherwise. I just like to know who the lads are putting a name to a person rather than discussing the matches with friends and calling everyone by the number on their shirt.

There isn't one good commentator on RTE, embarrassing actually, cringeworthy!

i composed a very good post a number of years ago on this subject.
realistically tg4 aren't doing much in terms of promoting are games.
the fact is the younger generation have no interest in the club and under 21 championships. or even the national league.
why because its on tg4 in irish. TG4 is not considered a "cool" station so the young dont watch it.. simple as.
compare that to the hype of the all ireland in the summer. on RTE in english.
Solution: Give some more games to RTE...
FACT

You think young people think RTE is a cool station ! and that's why the All-Ireland series is so popular . I like that , all the cool kids staying in to watch the late late show and listening to the Marian Finucane show.

Maybe not in Cavan but TG4 is certainly seen as cool and their coverage is excellant, unlike the 2 seconds Cavan get every championship.

i cannot see how any young supporter would actualy care if ti was on rte or tg4 they would just want to watch the match like the rest of us

TG4 should be commended for their coverage of Club and National league football having the commentary in irish dosen't bother me as i have a few words of our native language, however, if your local team is playing their is an option. Sky is approx 4-6 seconds behind reality. What I do is pause sky plus, log into the local station of the team that is playing online, the online radio is approx 8-10 seconds behind reality, therefore you listen to the match on your lap top and when the ball is thrown in press play on your sky plus, then the match on the radio and tv are in sync. I did this for the Crokes game last week with kerry Radio. Perfect.
