Ryan McMenamin retires from inter-county football

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Tyrone's Ryan McMenamin has announced his retirement from inter-county football after 13 years of service to the Red Hand county.
McMenamin told manager Mickey Harte of his decision on Monday night, but will continue to play for his club Dromore.
The 35-year-old won three All-Ireland medals during his career and collected an All Star in 2005.
McMenamin captained Tyrone in 2006, when he deputised for the injured Brian Dooher, and won five Ulster SFC titles.
He began his county career as a corner-back before moving to the half-back line, where he became a regular scorer.

he may not be everybody's cup of Tea ,but he was a tenacious player who always give his all for the cause.

Great servant for Tyrone. I have fond memories of his point against Kerry in the 2003 All-ireland semi-final, it steadied the ship a wee bit just as it looked like Kerry might play themselves back into the game. Best of luck to Ryan.

He used to have me wound up something terrible when he played the Dubs. I'd have had him in my team anyday. Good luck to him. A great servant of Tír Eoghain football as was said above.

I'm sure ricey would rather have his 3 victories in croke park over a back door qualifer defeat in kilarney. But if it helps you sleep at night ;).................Just saying.

ah duke_royal it clearly bothers you as much as it will eat away at him, sure simply read his article this morning and it tells you all you need to know!

He will no doubt be remembered for alot of his non-footballing moments shall we say!!!!!

One of the stickiest corner backs I've ever seen play, bit of the divil in him but you need that. Part of a great team and he'll always be remembered for giving his all.

Enjoy the rest.

A key component in an incredible team, the unsavoury antics shouldn't overshadow what a talented footballer and tenacious defender he was. Thanks for the memories Ricey

He was some boy. I think he didn't get the credit his talent as a corner back deserved because of the off-the-ball stuff people tended to concentrate more on. Tenacious, tough and well able to take a score when the opportunity arose for him to move up the pitch.

He presented medals to our minors a few years back and he was an absolute gentleman. He stayed to the end of the night despite having to be in Dublin for 11 the next morning for a kids coaching day.

Enjoy the retirement Ricey!

A marvellous player who got right up the nose of the opposition!

Great player but I never disliked a gaelic footballer as much as this guy. Good riddance but to be fair, a great servant to Tyrone. But the cynical nature of his game lets him down overall I am afraid.
I guess he was like Marmite, you love him or hate him!

is it true Ricey never played at minor level? if so, what an inspiration to any player who catches Gaelic fever at a later age. a key member of a great team, gona miss the white boots soloing down the line.
