(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Having had a read of a newspaper yesterday i was shocked and appalled at rumours of racism in the Cavan and Wexford Club championships,is this where we as an organisation are going or are these isolated incidents?

The Irish i'm afraid are one of the most racist people in the world. Not all are but there is a fair share of bigots on our beautiful island. Now that other ethnic groups are becoming more involved in our gaelic games, it's time to "bate racism out of the GAA". These racists have to be banned from clubs, they are a diease.

Daniel O'Connell once said that the Irishman was no friend of colour.

I doubt very much these are isolated events, I expect that Jayo Sherlock and the O'hAilpin could tell a few stories. I know from my own experience playing in Lonodn that a lot of our english born players were subjected to abuse from certain teams, being called tan .............. so I would expect that people of colour get even worse abuse.

Incidents in Wexford were well dealt with. I doubt it will happen again.

As richie said the Irish were some of the worst racists in history. Many of the big Southern US slave plantations were owned by Scots/Irish settlers and the Irish in Australia were notoriously racist towards the Aborigines especially the police service which was virtually Irish run. The Irish, Scots and Welsh did England's dirty colonial work for them and their record is quite shameful so this doesn't surprise me at all.

But don't worry boys, someone will latch onto this and will be blown out of all proportion and soon enough there will be campaign to stamp out racism from the smallest parish team to the biggest city team.

It said the Cavan county board had received a complaint and were investigating it.They mentioned the other players name and the sanctions handed out also (i think 2 players banned).

Yep its already started, we can make good use of all the shirts that Black premiership footballers in the UK refuse to wear you know "Give Respect, Get Respect". I mean us Irish are truly the devils work, intolerant, violent etc. Its pathetic, hundreds hundreds of games all over Ireland, every week, but thank god for facebook though how else will players vent their feelings.

I take issue with that Ulsterman.I dont know what its like up North.,but the demographic change down here has been nothing short of seismic. Many people here quite scared about what the "new ireland" will eventually evolve into but despite this there has been very little trouble here between the various communities compared to the race riots and horrific attacks that immigrants have faced in other countries like Britain when they first opened their borders.
On the Gaa thing,a huge number of children in this country are from African/Middle Eastern/Eastern European stock and that number is growing so if our wonderful organisation is to survive and thrive in modern Ireland then we should welcome their participation in our games with open arms.

The racist chanting from the thug element of the Tyrone support is becoming more common.

Without appearing precious...I think the prejudice in the Southern US states was in the main peddled by the WASP element and the red necks who were of an Scots/Ulster (Presbyterian) background..Hillbilly's etc.

That said I'm always mortified when I hear it from my own countrymen when you consider what previous generatuions from here endured as economic migrants.

Smallballs, the incident in Wexford happened in June. The player who was taunted was named as the accusation was true. The refs report wasn't given yet in Cavan.

Joncarter,

You can take issue with that by all means but historically and factually you cannot dismiss or ignore the fact that the Irish and Ulster Scots were very racist in their outlook and behaviour. Furthermore Northern fans and players take all sorts of 'British this and that' at games in their own province, especially from Cavan fans, and at games in other parts of the country. I have heard Cavan and indeed Donegal fans sing "What's it like to have a Queen" at 6 county fans but by the same token I have also heard Free State/Mexican stuff shouted at Southern players and fans in the North; all this could be construed as a form of racism. Tyrone have a particularly odious, arrogant element amongst their support too as was witnessed by Antrim people at the Ulster final a few years back but there are good and bad everywhere.

Now hold on a minute Ulsterman.."odious arrogant element"? Does no-one escape the scattergun? ..as they say in Trone you're becoming a real "Hate the people".

Just facts Tyronetim. Antrim people will tell you about the cat calls and condescending remarks from even some so called decent Tyrone fans at that final. "Get back to your soccer/ghettos" "Stick to your rioting/joyriding". It was on full flow at that game and don't even try to deny it because it was loud and clear at times. Some Tyrone fans have a reputation in Ulster for their antics.
